How to tell which gear

Featured Replies

Hi all. On an out of the car front wheel drive, 5 speed, tranny how do you know which gear the selector is in? With the shift stub all the way in, is this reverse? All the way out, 1st, 3rd or 5th? Position of neutral? While fooling around with mine I couldn't seem to find a position for neutral, although there seems to be a stop inbetween all the way in and all the way out. There is movement side to side but it is very little. I was turning the input shaft once I thought I found a gear. I did get what seemed to be reverse and what was a forward gear, and at one point a spot that made it very hard to turn the input shaft by hand. I'm trying to find the gear positions so I can determine how to set up the tranny in my reverse trike. Thanks for the help. Cheers. Dave Allen.

neutral will be in center of psuh / pull and swing left - right

reverse should be swing right and push

should be able to hear a deffinate sound when the "extra gear" engages to make the reverse work

BTW VW A20 reverse pull to case and swing to engine

Thanks. I thought this is what it would be but it was hard to tell. The center "swing" position is very small. Could it be a little hung up? Maybe I should try positioning the shift stub while moving the input shaft? Cheers. Dave Allen.

Its small on the tranny itself, but add the length of a shifter and it'll feel like it should.
