  1. Hi. What condition are the teeth on the cam pulleys? I had a similar problem on a Mustang. I changed the tensioner and the belt. The problem stopped when I changed the pulley(pulleys in your case). It seems when the engine was shut off it would kick back, or diesel, just a bit. That was enough to pull the belt over the worn pully teeth. It was my sons car and I had to fix it in the frat parking lot. I got to where I could pull that belt and set the tensioner and timing in under 30 minutes using a pair of channel locks to pull the tensioner slack to mount the belt. Cheers. Dave Allen.
  2. Hi Jacob. Important to remember here is that the key switch only activates the actual switch. The key switch moves a little rack and pinion that pulls a rod up or down the makes the actual switch make or break contact. The switch itself is usually mounted on the column and has a bundle of wires attached to it. Spraying the key switch will probably gum up the lock pins once dirt gets in from your key. I'd try removing the keyswitch and having a look for wear at the point it gets moved by the key and at the switch itself. It may just be full of crap and that won't allow it to move far enough to fully shut off. At least this is how most work (I'm not being Subaru specific here). Cheers. Dave Allen.
  3. I already have the LSD out of an '88 RX. Not going to use it afterall, offered it up but no solid takers. Cheers. Dave.
  4. Hello all. I hope this can help someone out there. I was at the Carson City, NV. Pick and Pull this weekend,4-26,-,4-27. In the first row of the foreign cars, about halfway into the lot were 3 interesting parts cars. The lot contains a lot of Subaru's anyway. There were two XT coupes, one on either side of the isle. One was an XT turbo, complete with the factory wheels and an LSD rear, and mostly complete. I don't know for sure but I think they were mid 80's cars. Two cars away on the same isle is an XT6, that was mostly untouched, at least until I took the front subframe, hubs and steering. It is an '89. It still had it's factory 14" alloy's with the centercaps. It looked like a decent car but had been rearended, and sideswiped behind the passenger door. I left the wheels and caps(in the trunk) and pulled 3 of them for you. The 4th had one lug nut that wouldn't come off( couldn't keep the rears from turning even after jambing a spare under it). I posted a message on Craigslist to a guy I talked to there about 3 weeks ago. He was looking for an H6 dissy. I hope he either sees the message there or here. Just trying to help. Dave.
  5. Hi guy's, thanks for the replys. In building my 2F1R project I am using a 2 wheel drive front crossmember, and Honda Goldwing for power. I have set it up using the FWD transaxel running 5th and reverse (the Honda has it's own tranny), or by using a rear diff in place of the tranny. Both will work, but there are issues about length. Thats where the front diff may be of use. It looks like it will be much shorter than either of the others. The rear diff is an LSD unit out of an '88RX, but the long snout is a problem he shorter snout from a Nissan 240SX is still a bit long. I'll lose the reverse by doing it this way, but I can overcome that. I think the shorter diff may be the ticket. I wanted to go with the 5 lug hubs more for the taller available wheels than for the anything else. I guess I should just keep looking for the right set of Suby wheels. Cheers. Dave Allen.
  6. Hello all. Last weekend I was pulling the parts to do a 5 lug conversion off two different cars. Both were automatics, one an XT6 the other an Impreza. I was wondering about the differential attached to the auto tranny. They look like they are bolted together seperate units. Can anyone confirm this? It looks like the bellhousing is attached to the differential case onto which the tranny is bolted. Is that correct? Do they share oils, or is that seperate? Next question is about the 5 lug wheels. Are they hub centriclike the 4 lugs are, or are they more lug centric? Will 5X100 wheels, meant for frontwheel drive cars, from oter brands fit? Thanks. Dave Allen.
  7. Hi all. On an out of the car front wheel drive, 5 speed, tranny how do you know which gear the selector is in? With the shift stub all the way in, is this reverse? All the way out, 1st, 3rd or 5th? Position of neutral? While fooling around with mine I couldn't seem to find a position for neutral, although there seems to be a stop inbetween all the way in and all the way out. There is movement side to side but it is very little. I was turning the input shaft once I thought I found a gear. I did get what seemed to be reverse and what was a forward gear, and at one point a spot that made it very hard to turn the input shaft by hand. I'm trying to find the gear positions so I can determine how to set up the tranny in my reverse trike. Thanks for the help. Cheers. Dave Allen.
  8. Hello all. I have posted new pic's of the trike project. To update: the engine has changed to a Honda Goldwing. The front wheel drive transaxel has been changed to an LSD rear differential. The engine placement is now front/mid. The unchanged parts are the Subaru front subframe that makes this possible. To date the parts need to be mated (this was just a check of the layout), and then I can complete the lower frame and the upper framework, then the body and finally fight with the DMV as to what it is. Cheers. Dave Allen.
  9. Hi Italo. I didn't see any, but then I wasn't looking for them either. There are quite a few Suby's on the lot. Cheers. Dave Allen.
  10. One more thing. I found another '93 Imprezza on the lot and it also had the finned rear cover. Must be standard? Cheers. Dave.
  11. Actually for what I need the 3.7 will be good. I went today and picked up the LSD rear. The car was marked as an '87 RX. I saw an XT that had the graphics on the side that said it was a 4wd Turbo, but it wasn't it was front wheel drive. It did have the rear window louvers on it if anyone is interested. I saw an '80 model (marked as a '80 GLS) wagon there that had a third headlight in the center of the grill under the logo. Is that an option or was it standard on the GLS? heers. Dave.
  12. Hey Brian. The pic and pulls are closed on Sunday here. Seems most other yards are too. Try a Saturday. Cheers. Dave.
  13. Hi Nipper. I am building a reverse trike. It started out as VW/VW and morphed into goldwing/Subaru after I found how easy to use the Suby subframe is. I have crossed many of the bridges mentioned in the initial post. Initially I wanted to avoid the cooling issues so I started to use the VW parts. Then I found the Suby bits and then aqquired a Honda Goldwing. The Goldie engine is smaller than both the VW and the Suby but the HP output is closer to the Suby engine. The torque is similar but comes on much higher in the rev range. I went to the wrecking yard today and found an LSD rear in an RX, that I plan to use in place of the Suby transaxel (front wheel drive, by using the front axels on the rear diff). The first Suby parts I bought were from an 85GL so they are 4 lug, so now I am planning the 5 lug conversion. Cheers. Dave.
  14. Thanks Guy's. I'll go tomarrow and pick that up. I did notice that of the rear diff's we looked at (there must have been well over a dozen) most were 3.9. There were also several 3.7's and one 4.11. In my application I need the rear diff to take the place of the transaxel, so I need the spline count to match. Cheers. Dave.
  15. Hello all. While poking through a local wrecking yard today I was looking at Subaru rear diffs. I found several with rear ratios from 3.7 to 4.11 and one RX that had the LSD. I have a couple of questions for the Subaguru's. On the LSD RX diff, I didn't notice but the car may have been Turbo'ed. If it is can I presume it has the 25 spline axels? If it isn't with turbo will it be 23 spline axels? Next question. Are there any Suby rear diff's that have a short or no long input? All the diff's I saw had a long snout on the front of the housing, for my application I'd like a rear diff with a short input snout. Two final questions. I saw a '93 Imprezza. It's diff had a finned rear cover, would that cover fit on the Rx's LSD housing? and finally is the finned cover standard on the newer rear diff's or is it an aftermarket item? Thanks. Dave.
  16. Hi all. I just saw this post, and some of the trouble spots are things I have encountered or I am encountering now. You can use a mid engine shifter by Empi that was made for a VW but will work on the Suby with just a little tinkering. If you don't have one or have difficulty finding one I do have an extra new one(still in packaging) you can have reasonable. If you are going mid engine/rear drive just use the Suby front wheel drive tranny. You could probably use the 4 wheel drive unit too but you'd have to cap the rear output shaft. By using the Suby subframe/crossmember you will solve a bunch of engineering woes when mounting the drive/engine as it all bolts up (or off in taking one down). I'd consider which year and model of Suby parts as the wheel patterns and brake systems will will vary. The question about the cable shifter is that the cable is for the clutch not the shifter. Make it easier by changing to a hydraulic system. Just my .02. Cheers. Dave.
  17. Hey all. Last week I was on vacation and happened to see a Suby parked in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It was older, judging by the 4X140 alloy wheels. Lord knows what the rust problem might be like there though. Cheers. Dave .
  18. Hello all. I have been working on the adapter to mate the Suby trans to the (boo, hiss) VW engine. Before you get all disjointed in the proboscis I went with the VW because 1. I already have it, and 2. no radiator related cooling issues. Right now I have a bit more steel to trim to get the adapter ring to fit over the flywheel. It already bolts up to the Suby tranny. While I've been doing this a friend wants a three wheeler too. He wants the Suby tranny and front subframe and a Harley Vtwin for power. I figure the easiest way to make this work is an adapter off the HD engine at the output on the crank. Attach a drive plate to mount the clutch and then the tranny. HD's aren't bad because they are non unit engines(meaning the engine is seperate from it's trans, whereas a unit engine has the tranny built into the cases). I was thinking a unit engine could be used if a transfer case was built and a Suby rear axel was used in place of the tranny. My question to you all concerns that rear axel(older 4 wheel drive type). Do the axels mount on the carrier the same on the rear as on the front? Do they use the roll pins and splines? Can you mount front axels to the rear carrier? Are both front and rear 23 splines (25 for turbo)? Thanks for the help. Cheers. Dave Allen.
