Head rebuild cost question

Featured Replies

So I have never rebuilt heads before and I want to do some work on the EJ22T before I drop it into the RX.

I priced out some parts from Paeco (paeco.com) and for Comp Valves, brass guides, valve seals, stainless steel seats and retainers, the price is $1,104. Does that sound about right? Is that too high?

Do I need to replace all of those parts? The head is of unknown mileage so how do I check for play in the valves?

I am basically want a reliable powerful motor w/good low end grunt.

Right now it's going to be a more of a really fast weekend car, but I am eventually thinking about rally or auto cross and possible stage rally.

Should I just keep the motor stock and then when I want to compete do the head work?

Thanks

i would not do all that if there are no issues

of course get a valve job and seals done

and have the heads deck for flatness

but i would spend my money on a little porting

instead of new valves and guides

the machinist that does the valve job should

let you know if any more serious work is needed

but i havent run into any that NEEDED that much

my 2 cents

but the price quoted aint bad for that kind of work

To me, that seems a bit steep, although you are going with comp valves those should not offset the price that much. A Suggestion would be to take it to a local machine shop and ask them how much it would be for them to rebuild your heads for you, also, they can determine what needs to be replaced and what does not.

As far as keeping it stock or performance, it sounds to me that you dont want to go all out since it will also be a daily driver. Are you thinking about increasing the revs by a bit? if so then get slightly stiffer springs but remember revs break rods.

(Im trying not to say what I would do, but just take all of this as a suggestion)

Thanks for the input.

The cool thing is that this is an extra set of heads that I have for the EJ22T so I can get the work done on them first and then slap them on the engine w/minimal down time.

But for that money you could just get a set of lightly used phase II 2.5 heads and change the cams.

or a set of EJ20 heads and intake.:headbang:
