February 9, 200818 yr Hi folks. The CEL is on in my 1999 2.5 liter Outback. I got the code read at an auto parts store. It is: P0440 - Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction Anybody have an idea what might cause this, and how serious it is? Thanks!
February 9, 200818 yr This could be as simple as not tightening the gas cap or overfilling the tank and getting gas into the tubes of the system. Did the parts store clear the code? If the CEL is off now and the car is running OK then you don't have a major problem. It may also clear itself and the light will go out after a time.

If that does't do it, I would check under the wheel well and look for rust/cracks along the gas filler tube. John
