Need Help With This..

Featured Replies

I am trying to track down a Popping noise coming from the passenger side, rear tire area of my lifted wagon. The popping happens when the wheel travels up into the well or down like dropping off a curb or something..I have gone over every bolt three times and pulled the hub/inspected brakes. Everything is tight and as it should be. I'm suspecting this thing here that I'v taken a Pic of. I put a grease zert into it and was able to add a little grease, no change. Should I take this thing apart? Any ideas? Thanks.

EA81 yes?

That's the torsion bar tube. It's possible that one of the torsion bars is broken or stripped.

So yes - definately pull that sucker out and check it.

Oh - and grease doesn't go there. Also it's "Zerk" not "Zert" - applogies if that was simply a typo.

Thanks GD...It is an ea81. I'll give it a whirl. And, I'll take that "Zerk" out.

check your shocks?it probably is the torsion bar, but i have bent a shock and had it act like that.cheers, brian

Well, how important is the set screw/bolt? Seems thats whats making the Popping noise. I removed it and the popping is gone.

Here's what I found. The set screw is not setting. Its allowing the bushing to rotate in the tube.I'm going to try a little longer set screw. Pic 2 shows the original set screw pushed into the bushing enough to bend it. Also, the set screw is worn at the end.Splines look Good.

I used the same set screw. I just move it around to where I had put that zerk. The two bungs are identical. I went out and hit every speed bump i could find, not even a little pop. So, if your getting a unexplainable pop out of the rear of your ea81 when your rear wheels travel up and down, re-position the torsion bar set screw to the alternate bung. It might fix it. BTW, this was a Huge Pop I was getting. Enough to make my passengers think the rear wheels were falling off.

good find....anytime i had any sagging or problems .i just replaced the whole damn thing. good job man.thanks for the pics.

I am having this exact same problem, it scares the crap out of the passenger, enough to drop their mouths and say what a piece of ************. only when I hit potholes or go over a speedbump fast. I will try this and see what happens, although I would mention that the side that is making the noise seems not to be as stiff as the other side. It will bounce more when load is in the rear going over a bump.
