Speedo acting erraticly

My daughter has just purchased a 1994 2.2ltr Legacy automatic.(Liberty in Australia). She says that twice now at low speeds the speedo jumps backwards & forwards between 40kph & 80 kph (25 to 50 MPH) I have driven the car but everything seems OK. Any ideas as to what the problem could be & how to fix it.

I do beleive this has a cable driving the spedo. You need a new cable. Its probably dry and has some damage done to it internally.

I had a 94 legacy wioth the same problem, fairly easy to replace too
