river rat Posted February 22, 2008 Share Posted February 22, 2008 hi, its been a while since i bothered any one but here we go. 1997 legacy wagon 2.2l std trans. i have a check engine light that gives me a code for the fuel evap. the place where i get service put a smoke test on the fuel system and it pored out of many orffices in the evap system area. my question is, is there a simple way to by pass/ over ride this so i can get my engine light off. i certainly don't want to replace all that stuff if i can avoid it. thanks all glenn Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
EVOthis Posted February 22, 2008 Share Posted February 22, 2008 well im not sure your emissions regulations were you are..but here in PA you would fail the state emissions test if you bypassed the EVAP canister..... come to think of it if you go by the book i believe you will fail state inspection also...... Sorry Glenn my response is as nebulous as the question is. These type problems can range from the gas cap loose or bad sealing to solenoids in the control system. Skip, they did not mention a specific code all they said was it directed them to the evap equipment back in the pass. side qtr panel. they indicated there is a canister and a bunch of hoses that i assume control and manage gas fumes that evaporate from the tank. it was in this area that the smoke leaked from when they did the pressurized smoke test. they said the smoke came from many places indicating that there were a lot of holes in the plumbing (not the filler neck which is somewhat new) my question is is it possible to bypass the system with a hose or hoses? there are no pollution tests in this area so this is not a worry, my issue is the damn check light... glenn Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Skip Posted February 24, 2008 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Thanks Glenn, that helps. The problem that the ECU would see and light the light could be as simple as the purge control solenoid. This is easy to replace. Changing it, if it's the problem, would allow the ECU code to be cleared and the light would stay out. If would help narrow it down if you knew the code. river rat Posted February 24, 2008 Author Share Posted February 24, 2008 skip, i'll get the code...i think though the big issue is that the evap system plumbing in that area has rusted and is now full of pin holes. if there was a diagram of the system it may enable us to remove the bad bits and bypass it with some rubber hose etc. up here in nova scotia (surrounded by sea water and with roads covered in salt is where the rust gods live.....) glenn Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am attempting to see why the holes would cause the light to come on. There may be some sensor than monitors flow rate of purged vapors or a sensor to show the intgrity of the plumbing, these I have not heard of. I was trying to find a componet that, if bad, would cause the ECU to light the light. Then we can see about the fooling of said sensor IF it needs fooled or possibly just replaced. river rat Posted February 27, 2008 Author Share Posted February 27, 2008 thanks for the tip...my reason for asking online was to get some experienced insight into what one can do to bypass/ override this emission system to stop the cel. in my area there are no pollution or emission tests to worry about. the evap system appears based on a pressurized smoke test to be shot full of pin holes and i cant afford to replace all the c**p. any advice would be appreciated. glenn Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
idosubaru Posted February 27, 2008 Share Posted February 27, 2008 i'd have a look at those lines - they are probably very easily replaceable with rubber hoses. remove all the metal and install rubber lines in their place. there usually isn't all that much stuff and it should be easy to find if it's in the fender area.
