December 21, 200322 yr What were the primary differences between these two? Both have the same engine, dual range 5 speed, rear LSD... Does the GL10 have a center lockable diff?
December 22, 200322 yr Most GL-10s didn't come with a D/R 5 speed, if there is one, it was a special option. All GL-10's that I have seen have the push button 5 speed. The LSD was not standard until 89, so that would be an option also. The center locking diff didn't come along until 87, in GL-10s they were usually single range trannys. The GL-10 were the luxury models, they had all the interior bells and whistle, the trip computer, digital dashes (uck!!!!), sun roofs, air suspension, crushed velor seats. It would be easier to get a GL-10 closer to a RX then the other way around.
December 22, 200322 yr Author Well I'm looking at acquring a GL-10 from a friend... '85 with 50,000 original miles. Dual range 5, EA82T, sunroof, all power, digital dash, air ride (one strut is bad), etc... He wasn't sure if it wasn a RX or a -10 but it's definately not an RX (no badging) so I assumed it was a -10. I've not checked on the rear LSD or lockable center diff...but was curious if it was standard or not. Thanks for the reply...I'll have to dig deeper next time I check the car out.
December 22, 200322 yr There was no 4WD GL-10 in '85, they were called the Turbo Traction model. In '85, all GL-10's were 2WD. In '85, basically all non RX turbos had the auto trans, the single range 5 speed made it's debut in '86. I think that's why your car has a D/R, it's a RX trans, this is not listed as a option but appearantly could be had. The LSD was available too, may or may not be there. These cars also had RX style seats rather than the GL-10 style that was in the '86 and later GL-10's. I did see one of these car once too. It looked like a RX but wasn't. It was a '85, loaded, with a D/R and it even had the RX checkered flag interior. A cool car, especially with only 50k on the odometer.
December 22, 200322 yr Author Great! I'm glad to hear it. Yeah...it has the checkered flag seats and such...so RX trans=center locking diff...awesome. Yeah...there's a very slight amount of rust from age...but the car is in excellent condition overall.
December 22, 200322 yr sounds like that car is alot of fun to drive. If it has a limited-slip-differential, that puts a whole new SPIN on handling, most obvious in the snow and mud, or other slick conditions. Lots of fun. yeah un huh.
December 22, 200322 yr I love that interior, very cool. Yes RX trans, no center locking diff. The locking diif came in '87 as Corky suggested, with the full time 4wd trans. Your trans doesn't need a diff lock cause it doesn't have a center diff but not to worry, they do essentially the same thing, the only difference is when your cruising on the street, your in 2wd, the later fulltime trans is always in 4wd. Yours is a good strong trans, no worries!
December 22, 200322 yr If it's an '85 EA82T, my guess is it's a Turbo Traction, the RX models had the RX badging but the TT models just say "SUBARU" on the trunk lid (like the Loyales) and there's no body kit/spoiler. I believe they came with digidashes though?
