Here's a new one.... this stumped me.

Recommended Posts

So i decided to take "wolf" out to stretch his legs. Out on the freeway i opened up full throttle. It did great for about the first 5 min. Then the check engine light came on. He then stalled till i hit about 65. Miraculously the check engine light clicked off and driving went back to normal for the rest of the drive. I tried to pull the codes and nothing came up.

If the check engine light comes on i thought there was supposed to be a code...

Not all codes are saved, especially if it clears itself up.

Pull them using just the 2 black connectors hooked toghether. This is *read* mode. That is the read mode that outputs old codes. And is very useful for tracking down intermittent or connection troubles.

You were probably using

U-check:neither connected, normal driving mode, outputs code only while Check engine light is on

or

D-check: green connectors, puts ECU into a diagnostic mode to look for current trouble. OUtputs current trouble but not stored codes.

Use clear memory mode to clear codes. hook both Greens and both blacks toghether, depress throttle, start car and run it for 40 seconds over 2000 rpm, until CEL blinks to erase all codes. If CEL does not blink, but remains lit, you have current code active. Check LED for code.

Yep. Heat riser tube is attatched.

When i pulled codes i had just the black plugs connected. Didn't get any codes. I had previously cleared all the ones which had been resolved.

Thats why it stumped me. I always thought if the CEL came on it would throw a code... Maybe it's just working out the kinks from only running on 3 cyl for the last month and a half... lol. I'll be sure to note if it happens again at all...
