What parts can I use off 99 OBS on my 89 Turbo Wagon?

Recommended Posts

A friend who runs a body shop called me this weekend because he's getting a wrecked 99 Impreza Outback Sport - has been hit straight in the front, deployed airbags. Has 100k miles on it. He's going to pull it out on the frame machine and make sure the engine is OK, etc. I know the radiator got pushed back into the engine, so likely has broken timing belt. He's going to see how bad the damage is and then decide whether he's going to fix and sell it, or else part it out.

He was wanting to sell me the whole car to use for rallyx, but it's an automatic, so I don't want it. (please no replies telling me to run it anyway)

If he decides to part it, what can I use off this car on my 1989 GL-10 turbo wagon rallyx car?

I thought about getting the engine (2.2L) for a later swap into my car.

Can I use the front and/or rear suspension for anything? I mean, are some of these parts useful in a 5-lug conversion or something?

Of course, all this depends on him actually getting the car. :)

If he decides to sell parts, I'll post it in the for sale section here in case any of the Impreza owners want body parts, etc.

Not much really. Struts and perhaps the knuckles in the front - *if* you do a 5 lug. Rear is different.

That's a great engine for a swap though - the 96 and up 2.2's have 142 HP instead of 130 due to design refinements.

But swapping that OBS to a manual would be better, cheaper, faster, nicer, and more reliable. Your call, but the EA82T will nickle and dime you to death if you keep running it for rallyx. Not to mention you will lose to everyone including people with stock EA81 powered Brat's. The EA82 wagon body is a heavy beast for the power it puts down. Unruly suspension too. I've never seen an EA82T powered wagon that could compete even a little bit in rally-x.

You'll learn.

Could I feasibly swap the dual range 4WD 5-speed setup from my 85 GL-10 turbo parts car into the OBS?

The decision to stay with the 89 turbo wagon for now is that we are just getting started and are staying on a budget. We're not planning to throw a bunch of money at the wagon, just use it as-is to get started rallyx-ing, see how we like rallyx, have fun, and decide what direction to go to next.

Not initially investing any work in the wagon other than an oil change, overall check of fluids, and swapping on the extra set of snow tires/rims that came with it when we bought it. I guess I'm just thinking out loud with the 99 OBS parts, no concrete plans for mods yet.

My friend actually placed 4th in open class in rallyx two years ago with a RX.

He had 2.5" turbo back exhaust, dual core radiator, and an intercooler, that's all the mods.

You just have to make sure that you don't overboost and you have to the engine cool, that's how you make EA82s work.

Rallyx isn't so much about power as it is about Driver skills. You can have an STi out there and still place low because the person doesn't know how to drive it.

Yes. Pretty easily, compared to swapping the engine into the Gl-10. You'd need adapter plates, axles ends (I think) and a maybe a modified driveshaft. Some people have done it on the board, they'll be more help.
