clutch

My clutch on my '90 legacy started slipping a bit today.... so my question is for you all is-- besides changing the clutch and pilot & throw out bearings and the rear main seal is there any thing else I should change while I have the trans out? What is this oil separator plate and what years did they come in plastic or metal? Is there a gasket on the oil separator plate that needs to be changed?

I reseal the baffle plate(Ultra Grey) - some folks replace it.

I always get the flywheel resurfaced - but that's just me.

Apparently the rear main seals don't usually go bad - sometimes I replace it anyway.

Folks here that have done more than me will chime in.

Good time to evaluate TB, WP, idler pulleys, cam/crank seals, etc assuming that you're pulling the motor.

With all those years, it might also be a good idea to replace the fork and retaining springs (or clips) and also the clutch cable. I did both on my car and it's a 96. Maybe I'm over cautious but that's not always a bad thing ;)

I also think having the flywheel resurfaced is a must. It's a little depressing to do all that work and be stuck with a chattering clutch! I had mine done for a little under 50$.

Good luck with the repair!

Definately the clutch clips!! Last car I did they were actually out of stock. 5 or 6 bucks that could cause you to pull the motor (or tranny) again!

A very wise investment.

Frag- I also have a 96 and i got a clutch cable for it......i am having trouble getting the clip off of the bracket by the clutch pedal.....and tips or tricks you have used to get that thing off.....

aartod-yes others have said...the one thing i cant stress enough is those clips.....i just got done my clutch in my 96 legacy and i pulled the trans.....it seemed every time i got the trans aligned i would see a clip drop out of the bellhousing...profanities ensured....i messed around for almost a half hour trying to keep those clips on the throwout bearing while getting the trans in........

Sorry Evo, I replaced the clips and fork (and all the rest of course) and had the flywheel done, but I was short on time and I still have the new cable in its pack and that will be installed first thing when it's warmer outside. If I ever do it before you do, i'll keep you posted, it's a promise. I remember replacing the hood latch cable on a Loyale and it was a pita. Hope the clutch cable is a little easier.

As for the clips, i remember having had trouble with them also. I think you can install them the wrong way and it seems ok but it's not.
