Subaru Dog Whistle

Featured Replies

 I've noticed that my 2003 Subaru Legacy, when running, emits a very high-pitched and barely noticeable whine or whistle. It's almost akin to the hum of flourescent lights and TV screens undetectable to others that I often hear. I've also heard a Baja doing this exact same thing.

My question is............................does anyone else hear it too, or do Subis speak to me in a way no other cars do?

I hear that high-pitched whine on both of our cars ('99 Legacy GT, '98 Outback LTD). I know it's normal because they've always made that sound. I suspect alternator "whine" although I've never tried taking the belt off to listen to the engine for a moment without the alternator.....

Oh, my. Here I was, thinking I was making it up, and it was my imagination. Nobody else could hear it!

The person who knows the answer gets this: {{virtual doggie bone}} and my fervent thanks!

(Maybe it's a cat whistle. Every cat loves my car. I have a cat rump print on my hood every morning!)

My 98 LOB Limited have the same dang high pitched whine coming from the rear. (Glad I'm not the only one who hears it. I hear the most high pitched annoying sounds, yet am deaf as a door nail for the most part.) Where is yours coming from? I'm thinking due to bheinen74s post, it might be my fuel pump because it's coming from the underside of the car. Doesn't bother me too much as I'm never really near the rear of my car with it running.

Mine SEEMS to be coming from under the hood, as is the case for the Baja I've witnessed doing the same thing.

Maybe if you record the whistle and play it backwards, it will give you a recipe for Really Rippin' Lentil Soup.

I have the same sound, it's common. Floor it, and it will get louder.:burnout:

Won't be flooring it in the Legacy anytime soon. See thread Parked Subi vs. Trailer... :-\

But as soon as I get out of the rental Focus and back into my car...such a flooring there will be!!!
