Got in some highway driving!

Recommended Posts

I don't know how far you guys (and gals) drive on the highway with your gen 1's. I decided to take my 79 Brat from Muskegon MI to Detroit today. I was a little apprehensive at first, because I normally make the trip in my 05 Titan. It's 203 miles one way, and the Brat never had a problem at all. I had it at about 68 to 75 the whole way. I normally only drive it in the city, but decided that today was the day to see how dependable it is. There are some cars that are more fun to drive no matter how much they are worth and what bells and whistles they have (or don't have). It was definitely a step back today without the navigation, the ipod, or the Rockford Fosgate tunes! But I loved it the whole way......especially the thumbs up along the way!

Well done Jon  Now you know you can leave your Titan parked and rely on your Brat for your daily driver :) . I'm sure you will save a few dollars when it comes to gas.

When I first bought my mine, I was hesitant about getting too far away from home, but this has gone away. She is my daily driver now with my motorcycle being my only back-up. And I drive 80 miles a day in Los Angeles traffic. Since I've had her, I have kept my eyes open for other Gen 1s. And I haven't seen one.

I'm not quite at the point yet where I am ready to plan that cross country trip or that Mojave Road Expedition, but I am getting closer with each turn of the wrench  . I'd love to get mine as clean looking as yours one day!

Cheers,

Crabman

Gen 1's are very reliable if maintained. I would drive mine anywhere. Just keep a travel box with you, containing some items. Long trips should have a few more.

  • Voltage reg
  • fuel pump
  • fusible link
  • belts/hoses/clamps
  • fuses
  • clutch cable
  • accelerator cable
  • maybe an alternator
  • accelerator pump and a few carb pieces/jets
  • bulbs/headlight
  • tools
  • flashlight

I sure I'm missing a few things, but these are the most common. "let you down along the road items".

I drove a Gen 1 back and forth 350 miles, 3X week not too long ago!

Gen 1's get you back in touch with "driving", the road and being a part of the car. New cars are boring to me! Kinda like the VW bugs.

Todd, you're right about getting you back in touch with driving! I didn't have any of the items you listed, (except the factory subaru tool bag)! I was a little worried about some things you listed like the voltage regulator, and maybe the alternator, but no problems so far.

Crabman....my brat is a picasso! Looks GREAT from 15 feet! Get closer and it's a mess. LOL I took it to a paintless dent guy today, and he is going to go over the WHOLE thing for 400.00! Not bad considering the previous owner backed into a fire hydrant (and wrecked the tailgate). And there are plenty of parking lot dings. He said he will make every ding and dent disappear! Then I am going to have it painted. I'm still torn between white and silver. Any suggestions?

Yes cheers to that! It's a very hard thing to explain to people that only know new cars. I actually don't even bother to try. But driving is so much more of an activity, on a much more concious level.

That's a good list too Todd, I'll have to get a kit together.

Jon, I think I'd be partial to silver, but that's just me. White gets dirty too quick.

Cheers,

Crabman
