  1. Wow I've been away from the board for a while. Just was catching up on some threads and noticed that Kostamojen posted a pic of my souped-up EA71 with the modified 1400 heads in this thread sometime last month. Just wanted to let you all know that if you are souping up a gen 1 engine and are interested in some of the parts from that engine they are for sale. The good stuff from that engine are those crazy heads, and those domed high compression pistons (made by Arias). In addition, The intake from that engine is also for sale. It has been modified to still deliver coolant to the block even though the intake (fuel) portion of it is no longer used. Everything else from that engine is scrap or is easily replaced. Yes I had planned to hot-rod an EA71, but now I am just happy having a solid running brat.
  2. There's at least one more possibility, advanced ignition timing can cause overheating. This is usually accompanied by some detonation at higher rpms too. I've been through this on my EA71. And then there is one more that I can think of that I'm sure you have already checked. But if your engine is significantly low on oil, that will cause your engine to run hotter than it should too. After warming up, my brat sticks right on the middle mark unless I'm asking more of her. Best, Crabman
  3. THANK YOU!! I have been waiting and waiting for a comment!
  4. That intake/weber set up looks awesome! Was that an ebay auction? How did you find it?
  5. I just have to respectfully disagree. Up until recently I was driving my Brat 80 miles a day on Los Angeles freeways. And by that I mean, it's stop and go one minute, then everyone is doing 85 the next minute. I never had a problem, I could pass when I wanted, weave in and out of traffic. Yep, like you mcrae0104, I have motorcycles for when I need my "speed quotient", and I enjoy the brat because it is so simple to work on even an amateur mechanic like myself can make some progress. You totally sounds like a Brat type of guy, but if you are looking for something that needs a little filddling and tinkering, I think you can find something for much cheaper. Just my 2 cents
  6.:banana:I PASSED CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS!! Yes it has taken me well over a year. I could give you all of my excuses and there are many. But I consider this a major accomplishment. Now just a couple more little things to do before I get legal plates and stickers on this thing. This is a huge weight off my shoulders, as with my current stickers I am just begging to get pulled over. I've attached the results. I think it is significant to mention that I do not have an Air Injection System (AIS) on the engine. Not only did the shop miss that in the visual inspection, but the car still passed! %HC is higher than average but still well within the limit. I was worried though because they were under the hood for a very long time. I assumed they were checking every vacuum line aznd emission control for correctness, but in retrospect I think they were trying to figure it out! I had to show them how to check the timing. They told me that it was failing and I showed them how to unhook the vacuum advance/retard and plug the lines. It was a perfect 8 degrees as I set it just yesterday.
  7. Well hang on now. A brat is my daily driver. It's may not be fast as everything else out there, but its fast enough. More importantly, it's fun as heck. But yep, that one is too expensive. I agree, $3500 tops. The things that aren't correct wouldn't bother me too much, as they can be fixed pretty easy.
  8. You know who has a mint dash? Jonv23. I've been jealous ever since he posted a pic. . But you know what Jon? I just got a mint antenna!!! Do you have one of those? Well I just had to interject a little. Didn't mean to go on a thread tangent. But before I quit writing, I just had a great idea. We have to start a thread, "Show us your Gen 1 Dash". That's going to be hilarious.
  9. So you live in Flag, eh? I used to live in Prescott back in '96 to 04. Anyway, I think I'd jump on that Prescott Valley brat. The price is right, and from those pictures, it looks like a solid unmolested body. Guess you wouldn't be able to run it without the gas tank. But you could always shoot some staring fluid down the carb while cranking it to fire it up for a few seconds. Thanks for the update.
  10. Yep, always a stiff ride. Over speed bumps, I swear I leave the ground for a few moments. As for the headlight upgrades. I have seen this on ebay for quite a while. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-79-SUBARU-BRAT-EURO-HALO-XENON-HEADLIGHTS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ120101311563QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories My fuel guage isn't that accurate. I planned on replacing the sending unit evenutually. But don't know if that's going to fix it. I think the tank holds 11 gallons, and generaly I fill up after 200 highway miles, to play it safe. My steering wheel does the same thing and yes I too appreciate the tight turning radius. Those center vents should not be blowing chilly air. If you figure out a repair for the dash, please tell the rest of us. Otherwise the easiest thing to buy a fabric cover. And lastly, I have a low roll bar for sale still. It's been in the 'for sale' forum for some time but I don't think there is any real interest yet.
  11. Try the part numbers listed in the test below. I ordered mine last year from Timmons Subaru in Long Beach, Ca. and they gotthem for me after a week. Be sure to let us know if you have any luck "Yes, the bushings that go on the bottom of the shifters are the same.(Part #633011130, #8 in the diagram). The other bushing goes where the bolt goes through to hold the shifter in place on the bracket. (Part #733146090,#5 in the diagram) "
  12. Hey whats up Legacide. Did you pick this one up or what??
  13. Sorry no. I only have Gen 1 stuff, and not a whole bunch of it.

  14. Bill! What in God's name did you let happen to your Brat? To look at your pictures was like travelling through time but only to specifally watch the gradual degradation of a subaru brat! Sorry I know this is off topic. I had to say something.
  15. Keep in mind those speedos only have five places, so it could be 80K, could be 180K. Yet, 180K wouldn't scare me as EA71 rebuild kits are still out there. If it's really as good as it looks, and there is no serious rust issues, I'd jump on it. You gotta look into the rust situation though. These brats are hard to find so how much you offer really just depends on how bad you want it. I wouldn't think $1500 would be out of the question if it is as good as it looks.
  16. Don't know if this is too old to bump, but the title just caught my eye. I was faced with a similar question a while back with my EA71. The only real option is to pull the motor. Once out, I realized I never would have gotten the heads off any other way. The studs were so loaded up with crud, the heads were completetly stuck on there. I had to soak the studs with PB blaster and then work them off by moving them out a little bit, pushing them back in, cleaning the gunk off the studs, then doing it all over again 100 times. It took a very long time and would have been impossible if the engine was still in the car. And as everyone here will tell you again and again, removing the motor is nothing to be scared of. You and a friend can lift it out in a matter of an hour with a little planning.
  17. With an EA71 in good shape and a nice tight tune-up you can hit 27 on the highway as long as you are not to heavy footed. Yes, I think both of those cars require the valve adjustment every 12,000. At some point, subaru put in hydraulic lifters, I am not sure when, early 80s or something. When I first pulled the valve covers off my EA71, I was blown away by the amount of crap and gunk. In addition, the cork gaskets were dried and completely cracked through in many places. I pulled the oil pan off too and just found all kinds of carbon and gunk. Cheers, Crabman
  18. Well hey is that around town, highway, or ?? It's my understanding that the 4WD cars always do a bit worse than the 2WD cars. My brat, which has the same drive train as your wagon has done high 20s (MPH) on the highway. But that was after a lot of work and having it very well tuned up, I mean the works (new plugs, wires, rotors, valve lash adjustment, new air filter). Chances are you could stand a tune-up, but that's not too bad for one of these old soobs. Not in my opinion.
  19. Yes I have seen them before. They are flush with the roof of the cab. There must be pictures out there somewhere.
  20. Hey Moosens, regarding the black color on the roll bars. Would you say that it was a flat black, semi-gloss, or ??? Your best guess is fine. Just want to come as close to original as possible. Thanks!
  21. Hey fellas. I'm about to drop some stuff off at the powder coating place. A high roll bar and a winch bumper, and I'm sort of on the fence about what color to go with. Right now I am strongly leaning toward a flat black or maybe a semi-gloss black. Any thoughts on this? Anyway, brat is never going to be a perfect restoration, but I am putting an effort into keeping it original where I can. So my question(s) to you fellas is: What colors were available originally for the roll bars and winch bumpers? Most of them I have seen have been white. Though I think I have seen a few winch bumpers that are a powder blue color. One more question too. I'll be selling the low roll bar that is currently in my brat. I am thinking about dropping it off at the powder coater too, to make it more valuable. Would you think there would be much interest in this from board members? Have a great weekend everyone, Crabman
  22. Tried to PM you jibs but it looks like your mailbox is full. Got any pics of that winch??
  23. Yep I did find one, actually two of them, Brat runs great now too. First one I bought from ebay, then turns out they could be ordered from Kragen! And before I told my Dad that I had one, he had ordered one from Kragen.
