June 10, 200817 yr I need to "remove" the front cat on my 87 XT (non-turbo). Will an early car (say 82 GLF) fit? Need to keep the O2 but run just the mid-pipe cat Bill
June 10, 200817 yr No. The length of the tubes from where they curve up to the heads are shorter on the EA-81s. If you still have the spacer blocks that the ASV tubes attached to, then you may be able to use it.

June 10, 200817 yr Hmmm, maybe someone has swapped it over to an EA-82 Y-pipe. You can put one of those on an EA-81, but not the other way around, without the ASV spacer blocks.
June 11, 200817 yr Really old EA81's and EA71's didn't have the spacers - the ASV's injected into the top of the cylinder head. Either way, it likely won't fit an XT due to the differeces in the size/shape of the dust sheilds and clearance with the cross-member. It's also almost certainly a smaller diameter - 87 XT is 95 HP MPFI - 82 GLF is 73 HP. GD

June 11, 200817 yr Author well, other than removing the existing pipe, cutting it back to where I can get into the cat and clean it, any other recomendations? (other than a custom made piece from a shop)
