86 Brat high oil pressure, and leak.

Featured Replies

I finally have my brat on the road. Woo Hoo!!

However now that I am driving it , the oil guage is almost maxed out. After driving for 30 minutes or so it droppes down almost to 50. There is also a small oil leak that looks like it is coming from top of where the oil filter goes in. It is throwing oil on the under side of the hood, so I didnt notice it was leaking at first. Any advise?

You have a bad front main seal - the crank pulley is chucking it all over the engine bay.

And the high oil pressure is either a bad sender or the gauge is mis-calibrated. Test it with a proper pressure guage (mechanical) and see what you really have. Might want to add a 3 gauge cluster of temp, oil pressure, and volts as the stock gauges aren't all that great 25 years later.

The gauge on my 85 brat always reads up high. When I got it, it also had a leak in the same place. It needed a new oil pump gasket so I checked the oil pressure relieve valve when the oil pump was off, it works fine so I havent worried about the gauge reading high.

The oil pressure was high on my hatch since I bought it, I just thought it had a good pump on it and I felt pretty good about it. Turned out the sending unit was bad.........

Replace that and see what it does, unless you don't want to know just how low it really is.
