XT6 Parts Swap Into Impreza OBS?

Featured Replies

Not much is coming up in my searching for finding out what XT6 parts swap into a 1997 Impreza OBS. I'd like to know if the manual tranny from the XT6 will mate to my EJ22 bellhousing, if the final drive ratios are compatible, if the drive shaft from tranny to rear diff is compatible, and if the front axle's DOJs to tranny are compatible.

Also wondering if the suspension + running gear will swap over. The XT6 has some nice struts and disc brakes. Ideally I'd like to swap the rear struts + hubs + spindles + everything else into the Impreza so I have rear discs. Are the stub shafts out of the XT6 hubs compatible with the rear axle's outer DOJs? At least want to swap over the spindles + backing plate + caliper + whatever else so I can have rear disc brakes.

Maybe there's already info out there but I couldn't find it. Please advise !_!

that's it, that's all the questions you have?

the XT6 rear stuff is completely different from EJ, not swappable without major customizing, machine, welding, fabricating or something along those lines. get any EJ rear disc stuff for the impreza.

XT6 manual trans will not bolt up to the EJ engine. you'll need an adapter plate to make that happen.

the front EJ axles should slide onto the XT6 trans.

the XT6 will be a 3.9 final drive. i forget on the impreza, but i think it's either a 3.9 or 4.11. that should be easy to look up - there's a long list of EJ final drive ratio's for manual trans that a search will bring up. just swap the XT6 rear in it's place if it's different.

Yeah I'll find my rear diff's drive ratio easy enough.

What about drive shaft from tranny to rear diff. Need to be lengthend, shortened, or is it compatible?

Basically a friend may be parting out an XT6 and it would be prime time to buy some cheap parts.... if only they swapped in.

EJ front struts can be used in XT6s......so I would assume the reverse would be true.

front axles, hubs, bearings, knuckles and brakes all have to come from the same car. but if you wanted to, you could use XT6 stuff on the imp.

EJ trannies are a different length (shorter?) than EA ones. and the center carrier bracket is very different from one car to the other. so you'd have to use the imp's driveshaft, and it would have to be modified. but the slip yoke and flange at the driveshaft are the same.....

like gary said.....the rear is an enormous project, with zero advantages (inferior parts to pretty readily available EJ stuff). Just run up to UPull, and get a rear disc setup off of one of the dozens of early Legacies....

EJ front struts can be used in XT6s......so I would assume the reverse would be true.

yes and no, they fit, but not without some modification. When putting EJ struts on a XT6 you need to widen the flange at the bottom, so, the XT6 strut is too wide for your impreza. The bolt holes are also too small.

he covered that in his next sentence:

what he is saying is use all XT6 stuff or all impreza stuff (axles, hubs, knuckles, struts, etc). but you bring up the possibility of just modifying the impreza knuckles/XT6 struts to fit. the XT6 struts would need to be drilled out for the larger holes. and the spacing dealt with too. that wouldn't be too difficult.

no, struts were not on that list. interchanging them is very possible......not a direct bolt-on, but doable.

Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth.
