Transmission is making a noise something like a clicking or clacking...whats odd to me is that is does not make the noise when cold. If I drive say 15 mins it begins. Most notable in third gear and fourth. It will also make the noise in nuetral if you get the rpms up around 3k. Also I can make the noise go away or lessen by moving the stick around (bushings are shot and stick moves quite liberally side to side while in gear). Also only makes the noise under load...let off the gas and it stops clacking. What say ye? I'm so perplexed as to why its dead silent when cold. aircraft engineer Posted July 5, 2008 Share Posted July 5, 2008 I had a prob like that with a Mitsu Montero - the trans was losing the main bearings. Ate 2 sets of bearings until I replaced all the gears PLUS the bearings (glad I was having work done at a local Comm College shop) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
subie94 Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 maybe the little spring that connects the shift rod to the stay rod broke and its hitting something.....i would def. first do a thorough visual inspection of the whole car...... +1..i had same problem with the spring on my 94 legacy with sloppy shifter. now i gotta find out why my 92 doesn't like 4th gear,almost feels like it's kicking it out of gear..to the point where i gotta hold it in gear.of course it doesn't do it with a load on trans,only if i let off gas..(gotta get under it one of these days and check trans mounts) or it could be what grossgary said..check the heat shields too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It'll be making a visit to the local guru as I somehow got a rock between the right fan and radiator and put a hole in the radiator...not fun when you're 300 miles from home and 30 from what some call civilization. I think I can manage it but dont want to get in too deep...have two days off work though so I have time. Do you think changing the gear oil would be at all beneficial at this point? EVOthis Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 radiator is pretty simple to replace.....drain system....pop off brackets.....hoses.....fans.......it kind off just pulls right out.......it shouldnt take more than maybe and hour or two...while your doing it you might want to consider also changing the upper and lower rad. hoses......it def. cant hurt to change the gear oil at this point.....besides you will get to see how much metal from your gears is on your drain plug.......
