97 legacy AT oil temp light

Featured Replies

hi,

in my 97 legacy L sedan

when i start the car the AT oil temp light flashes

im not sure what that is.. im assuming auto tranny fluid temp..

i was going to drain it fill it, drive it drain it then fill it a few times to change up the fluid. is that hte correct way to do it?

what does the light mean? and why is it on...?

sometimes the cars shifts are very clunky... liek itll feel liek someone just dumped the clutch when it shifts sometimes.. but that is generally only when im barely on the gas... when i am reving it higher, it usually shifts a little smoother... ALSO the clunkiness isnt always there. i do believe ive noticed it is mostly there once ive driven the car for a bit before hand. when i start it cold, it generally doesnt have that problem.

could that be the oil is too hot and causing it to shift clunky?

when i put the car in park or pull it out of park or from drive to reverse or any variation.. theres a boom sound like somethings hitting hard.. or it sounds like im doing a neutral drop..

then when im done driving, ill put it in park and after i let go of the brake in park the car will roll as usual.. but then when i shut the car off.. the car will roll once again. and the roll after i shut the car off is always more dramatic than the amount of roll when i relase the brake in park.

what could these symptoms be? Thanks a lot for any help.

Fred

The flashing means the last time the transmission was in operation there was a problem. The codes are store and you need to pull them to find out what the issue is.. also you have another post which could be related to this one.

Search this site for "Flashing AT light" and another for "torque bind" and see if your symptoms match any of those threads,

The clunky shifting is old fluid. The TB you are exhibiting is most likely from a failed Duty C solenoid, which has to be fixed (and change the fluid at the same time). I am guessing at that since the age of the car seems right for it.

The 16 flashes mean the last time the car was used, there was an electrical fault in the transmission. Its to get your attention.

How does it feel when you back out of a parking space or making a tight turn?

when im backing out of a spot, it feels liek there is resistance but im rarely backing up at a speed where the stutter happens.

how much is it to change that solenoid?

How many miles are on the car, then i can give you my recomedenation

same reply as your other transmission related thread - your fluid needs changed. if you're doing the drain and fill method then it's going to take a number of times to get it all out, particularly considering what is in there right now has caused something to fail.
