Labor Day Fun

well, not really...

so, my 92 Loyale has been acting up lately.

It all started about 2 weeks ago when i would feel a slight hesitation while driving. then it progressed into where it would sputter and almost stall when starting from a complete stop.

ex. car in 1st, let out clutch, give it gas, but nothing but a slight sputter..press clutch down, feather the gas pedal, and suddenly the engine roars to life.

now, it is having a hard time even starting at all, unless i feather the gas pedal while turning the key. if i press the gas a few times while turning the key, it will start maybe 50% of the time. it won't start at all by just turning the key.

pulled the plugs, all fine and have about 12,000 miles on them. wires have about 25,000 miles on them, as does the cap and rotor.

fuel pump cycles on when i turn the key, so it's working.

i'm leaning towards a failing coil as if i mess with the wire going from coil to rotor, i can get it to start, but again, need to give it gas to get it to start.

also, this "sputtering, stalling, missing" condition only appears to be happening at low rpms(under 2000) or from a stop. haven't had it out on the highway to check out performance, but it seems to have enough power to climb hills around here without a problem.

i don't know..anybody care to chime in??

thanks in advance folks...

went through the process, and no codes..

temperature has no bearing on the condition..

just a condition thats progressed from a slight hesitation, to almost stalling from a stop, to now having difficulty starting w/o giving it gas...

Sounds like a classic MAF problem to me. It's the only thing I know of that can cause those kinds of problems yet not set a code. If it were a bad CTS the ECU would surely complain. O2 is ignored when cold.

You can try cleaning it with some brake cleaner. If you are using an oiled air filter the oil can cause problems with the MAF.

Also check the coil resistances and check the color of the spark.

well, swapped in a new coil and coil wire, and problem(s) be gone.
