'93 Impreza maintenance help

Featured Replies

just picked up a '93 Impreza L, 1.8L, fwd, 5sp, a/c, 175867 miles, for my nephew. paid $1050.00 for it.

body has one rust hole. Car runs great even though the engine is not real smooth at idle like my 2.2L, probably needs a complete tune-up. Still gets up and goes with that 5sp.

has the usual oil leaks. will be changing the pullies, timing belt, oil pump and w/p.

The p/s pump is leaking, should I just change the o-rings or at this mileage replace it?

My understanding is that the timing belts and pulleys are the same for all 1.8L and 2.2L, is that correct?

In the parts books it seams to list some part#s for a '93 only and then '94-'96is there a difference btwn a '93 and '94-96 1.8L that I should know about?

Thanks for any help u can provide, what to start buying parts this wknd.

ej18s are essentially the same as first gen ej22s, i' had both cars at the same time, the only difff is that the ej18 tps is diff and it does not have a knock sensor!! yeah u read it right no knock sensor, lol

just go to any pepboys or advance (which i prefer) and ask for parts for that particular vehicle... now whos doing the job?

my garage, my tools, but he will be learning and doing most of the work with my guidance. He's 5' 10" and 265lbs, I will see if i can show him up again when it comes to breaking that crank bolt loose, everytime I do, he's back in the gym with a vengeance. LOL

sounds like a basket case, i better buy it from you?

sounds like you got everything covered - your info sounds right on.

My EJ22 is a little rough at idle too, but I don't think it's an issue since it smoothes out almost instantly. I suspect the harmonic balancer but I don't plan on changing it just yet.

As to the p/s pump. There are two rebuild kits from Subaru (you'll need both) for about $30 each. Jason in parts (1-866-528-5282....formerly Auburn Subaru) can give you a good price and will ship. The kit doesn't include the bearing; probably because it won't be bad. I posted the bearing number somewhere on the board if you want to do it anyway. The kits are cheap compared to the price of a new pump (hold on to your hat!). Fairly easy job, just make sure you see which way the vanes go in because it'll fall apart in your hands if you're not careful.

'93 with EJ18 is a great little car. Resist the effort to install 15" or 16" wheels/tires; car is a stone with them. Goes like a raped ape on 14" tires.

Best of luck with it. Here's my old one:

I miss it. Upgraded to a '97 Impreza wagon; still fun but not as much as my '94.

the rough idle was caused by a bad IAC O-ring. Replaced the o-ring.

After replacing all o-rings, new w/p, t/b, the nephew driving it for 1 1/2 months and loving it, some 72 yr old drunk in an Acura mdx? slams into him while sitting at a red light. Right side of trunk and tail light totaled, rear doors will not open. One tough little car. Still runs except not legal due to tail light.

Any buyers??
