Speedometer sticking

Featured Replies

I've noticed an odd quirk in my XT when going on the highway - above 45, and the speedometer sometimes sticks up there until I slow back down, then it gets a clue an drops. Would that be the speedometer itself, the cable, or a combo of both?

Not sure... But my '89GL did the same thing in cold weather. Would be sluggish in getting up to speed or coming down from speed, and also would stick at 15mph for a few seconds after coming to a complete stop.

I believe on mine it was the actual dash, but I also believe that it is a symptom of oil creeping up the speedo cable and mucking up the internals.

It was 5 years ago, so I don't remember that well though.

You might be able to take it apart and spray deoxit inside to clean up the connections and contacts.

I agree, it sounds like the actual unit. A bad cable exhibits itself as a jumpy speedometer that twitches instead of staying steady at a steady speed, and then nothing.... (that's what the one in my Justy did -- a new cable made it all better).
