95 Legacy EGR

I have seen some EJ22 Subarus that don't have EGR systems but i haven't noticed a pattern. i'm wondering if there's a rule to tell which 95 EJ22 Legacy's weren't equipped with EGR's.

 

the reason i ask is that i have a 95 EJ22 w/out EGR and a 97 EJ22 w/ EGR and i want to use the 97 longblock (it has a ton of new parts/seals) with the 95 harness (already prepped and ready), ECM, intake, etc. in my hatch.

 

for smog reasons, i need to be able to demonstrate that the donor car was CA emissions compliant non-EGR from the factory, and i need to be sure that whatever configuration made it such applies to my car.

As far as I know the 95 with automatic transmissions have the EGR.

That's been my experience.

MGG - In 1995 only automatics have EGR, the manual transmissions do not.

 

It's only post-1995 EJ22's that you can't tell. Almost all post 1995 EJ22's have EGR. There are some up to 1997 and i think 1998 that don't have EGR but there's no rhyme or reason to it, it's completely random.

 

I have one from a 97 on an engine stand in my garage and the intake manifold is in my Legacy. No EGR at all.

 

Sounds like you want to "tell them" you have a 1995 manual trans EJ22.

 

So how do they actually check, will they pull the VIN off the block? I don't think the VIN would be truthful to the EGR system though, considering some later engines (like the one i have) don't have EGR, but the rest do.

the car will be obd2 at that point, so they'll just plug it into their emissions machine and it'll tell them the year/model based on what the ECM identifies itself as then they go through with their emissions systems schematics to verify everything is there and working.

 

Subaru ECM's specifically state year, model and engine size but they only identify the trans to an ssm by what funtions are available so trans identification would be based on input not programming, right? iirc, eliminating pin 50 of the harness makes the ECM think its got a manual trans.

 

the real issue is not that the 95 manifold doesn't have an EGR, its that the 95 ECM and harness won't support an EGR. since the 95 harness is already prepped for install i want to use it but then if i use the 97 EGR equipped manifold for "looks," the car will fail visual because they do verify that the EGR is operating (i know from experience...:rolleyes:).

 

my car will have a manual trans so as long as i can find documentation to support that all 95 manual trans EJ22 Legacy's came w/out EGR systems i should be fine.

intake manifolds are easy enough to swap, how often do you have to do this? could you just swap intake manifolds and make it "look" right? how closely do they check.

 

that stuff is so bizarre, they flakes. good luck pulling it off. hopefully you don't have to go through this every year!?

i just need to find something published by fhi or soa that says manual trans legacy's were not factory equipped with egr systems and i'll only have to go through this once.

 

i guess this thread should be in the retrofit forum but whatever...

 

since i'm dropping the ej into my 84 hatch, i have to have everything inspected by a state smog referee who will visually inspect to see that all the factory emissions systems from the donor car were swapped along with the engine and each system/part is hooked up/functioning. after that i just go through routine biannual ca smog checks with a sticker telling the tester/state that my 84 hatch gets smogged as a 95 legacy.

 

when i did the spfi swap on this same hatch, the ref looked at the diaphragm of the egr to make sure it opened off idle. using an egr equipped manifold will only work if i eliminate the solenoid and run manifold vac straight to the egr valve so that its functional.

 

i guess i'll keep looking for the documentation i need, maybe a dealership can help. i hate blatantly violating the law (even the retarded ones designed to sweep real issues under the carpet, which is exactly what ca's smog laws do) because it makes my local political actions and greater social opinions hypocritical.

ej22's installed in legacy's equipped with MT up to 1997 did not have egrs. If I read your thread correctly it's a 95 w/ a MT and the wring harness does not have a connector for a egr? If there is no CEL for a egr then you should be OK. It is very confusing especially when the CA emissions is thrown in. The under hood sticker for the vac routing will show whether or not a egr was originally installed on the car. That is what they'll go by. Check the sticker it'll also indicate if CA emissions.

after that there are *some* EJ22's without EGR but they're more random than anything else from what i've seen (i had an automatic EJ22 without EGR 3 years ago, still have the motor).

Gary, you could very well be correct. When I was looking for a ej22 the boneyard guy asked several times if it was AT or MT. When I asked him why he told me what I stated in my post that legecys MT EJ22s were non egr.

The underhood sticker however is the bottom line which is why I mentioned it. If the sticker reads CA emissions and the vac routing shows non egr I'm pretty sure that is what they'll go by on a visual. Of course if there's a CEL all bets are off.

The engine is from the boneyard, and is installed in an 84 Hatchback. I don't hink you could make the EJ22 run on the EA81s Vac setup lol

i called the turlock, ca dealership and they're so butthurt about going out of business that they didn't even take me seriously.

 

so i tried calling sonora and they just laughed that i would even ask for documentation on something "so old."

 

i'm just gonna stick the non-egr manifold on there and let the ref decide if he wants to accept it...

 

worst case scenario, the ref will insist i have a working egr. if that's the case i'll put the 97 egr equipped manifold & ecm in it and run wires for the egr after the fact.

 

while i'm here, does anyone have part numbers for the following EJ stuff so i can order them online:

 

o-ring seals for coolant crossover

newer metal oil separator

center t-belt cover seals (the rubber guys along the top & bottom)

 

i can call the dealer again if i have to, no big deal. those guys are just so bent outta shape right now...

when i bought the metal separator plate it also *requires* different screws/bolts than the original plastic. don't know how necessary they are, but i bought them.
