I put an FE engine in my 77 wagon tonight. I have heard that they were supposed to have different heads, maybe different cam and bigger valves. Was gonna tear this engine down to compare, but needed something to drop in my car badly. The thing runs really good, I only drove it a couple miles, but it seemed quicker that the other ea71s I have run.

 

I had been sceptical of the FE myth, I figured the FEs performance was due to it's tranny, But now I'm not so sure. Mine is mounted to a 4wd trans, and it seemed quicker. Has anyone torn one down and compared the engine parts to other ea71s?

Firstly,can you please check for stampings on the heads for me? I'm looking to see if some letters are on the heads other than the cast EA71 and stamped serial number.

 

 

THe FE heads different than the other EA71.Has its own camshaft -better lift/duration.

 

Tranny case is its own although I don't think it matters much.It's the taller 2nd and 5th gear that get the mpg's. And there's a low driven gear all its own too. p/n 34145 4300 Normal 5spd LDgear is 44 teeth but it doesn't mention how many on the FE.

 

Hope this info helps answer some Q's.

 

I'm hoping I can swap in those gears since I have them and the shims in new form from old dealer stock. Also hoping I can work it all into my '74 4door...another matter.

Valves are the same size in all EA71's.

Well the 4x4 and FWD models from those years have different power numbers, but I'm not sure what the physical differences are. I do have the parts manuals and service manuals from the 70's if we need to cross reference something.

Yes,and not thru the pistons. They remain the same throughout the EA71.

The one I had a few years ago definetly was more pwerful then the stock EA71 I pulled from my '78 Brat. Had much more get up and go and would make the truck leave a stoplight totally sideways. Seat of pants dyno said it had mucho more power. I did a compression test but I can't remember the numbers for the life of me but it was higher then the compression numbers on the stock EA71 from the Brat.

That and it was a japanese crate motor as far as I could tell. But yeah, my old 77 wagon was F A S T!

My old 1988 omega wagon went good with the 1600 it was fitted with. when i had to replace the whole disty it never went as good after that.
