Has anyone ever done it? How? Any Ideas?

 

just to clarify, there was no stock power steering in any gen ones, was there?

none of my factory service manuals show any sort of gen 1 power steering setups. I would believe that possibly an EA81 rack might fit with some modifications but for the pump, that might be tricky. I do know that the EA81T and all EA82 pumps are the same but the bracket that bolts onto the EA81T sits back onto the motor since there aren't any timing belts to clear like the EA82. What sucks is that I haven't seen a gen 1 EA71 that have the bosses on the block like the EA81Ts and the later EA81 NA engines. I would think that if you could find the rare EA81 PS pump that sits off on the passenger side over the head, it might be doable.

even those though, the early ea81's didn't have the holes threaded for the pump to attach. but at least the holes are there... I've threaded them before for PS. but for ea71, it's hard to say if the holes are there....

I don't think Gen one have power steering, but EA71 still in use from 1600 Gen two to the 1600 Loyal. And some of these Loyal have power steering attached to EA71 engine.

No Gen 1 had power steering. I doubt it to be possible to do without some major work.

if you can find an ea81 (gen2) with p/s it's possible, either turbo or n/a would theoretically mount up, actually the n/a will be easier, but a pita still. You'll need to cut the inner tie rods down and re-tap them, and as for the motor, as mentioned above if it's an 1800 the bosses will need to be drilled/tapped, 1600, idk I could check my parts brat...

 

You could fab a mount for an ea82 pump kind like the gen1 ac setups and that rack should fitthe x-member just cut the tie rods down...

 

Put in a 1800 motor/trans (or fat case bellhousing) and the gen2 x-member/a-arms, fab the radius rods to stock location, camber will be an issue. then power steering would be as easy as finding a working ea81 pump/mount/rack/hoses.
