any idea why my gas light goes on at like 1/4 tank....?

 

isnt that way higher than it shoudl ever be for the gas light to come on...? its only when the car just starts for thje most part... itll flicker while driving sometimes...

The low fuel light sensor is installed on a fixed bracket in the fuel tank. Subaru fuel level sensors are known for being inaccurate, but usually read on the low side (showing empty at 10 gallons). You have the reverse issue maybe.

 

Fill up the tank and tell us how many miles you go untill the light stays on.

hmm. my car is REALLY inconsistent with gas mileage... its ranged from like 200 to 300 a tank..

 

i drove from long island to rochester last weekend and all highway i got 310 miles on the tank.. when im driving around town.. i expect to get only like ~250 miles per tank

 

right now its about 170 at 3/4 of a tank..

sometimes it is on but is on very faint at about this level..

 

 

normally when the gas light comes on at a level i would consider appropriate, i end up putting in about 10 gallons in the tank.

I wonder if your sender is bent or something. usually a can of techron helps, but you may have worse issue. Your range is about what i see depending upon traffic ect etc etc.

 

 

How mechanical are you?

 

Its really easy to pull the snders (you have two) and check them.

yeah... i waste a lot of gas driving in the snow.....

 

im pretty mechanical i suppose.. and if not im a fast learner.. in school for mechanical engineering so im looking to learn.

 

 

i put bottle of techron before i drove back to ny from california.. and changed the fuel filter about two months ago..

 

so how do i go about checking...?

Behind the back seat under the floor are two plates Remove the screws and the plates (dont loose the tiny screws). Under those are the sending units. Passenger side has the light and fuel pump, right side has the sender, remove them (dont loose the tiny nuts). Clean the wipe arm surface of the senders with a hard pencil eraser (that may help the gauge). Inspect the bracket for damage. The light sender may be bad. It should be obvious as to which one it is. they dont go bad often but it happens.

Its still behind the back seat. it can easily be done from inside the car on a legacy, i've done it.

yes, the access plates for your sedan are in the trunk, directly behind the rear seat. you may find it easiest to pull the back seat out to get to them rather than leaning in from the back end.
