what's the dif?

Featured Replies

newb question, if I wanted to run a 92 Legacy rear dif on my 90 Loyale, (don't worry about gearing issues for this question)

would I adapt the ea82 moustache bar to the Legacy dif

the Legacy bar to the Loyale

or c) none of the above, it's all legos?

AFAIK The actual diff would be the same, but yes the ways that it mounts up are different.

you can make the mounting work. just swap out the rear diff cover. the bigger prob. is the axels. you will have to use the rear axels from the car that the diff came from.

the Loyale has stub shafts and the legacy dose not.

aha! yes, that's right! geez I stared right at it but forgot about the stubbies...

hmmm... what if I swipe the whole shooting match, from the struts to the tires? can I lego the whole dasm assembly into the Loyale?

nope, the loyale has trailing arms and the EJ series have multi link suspension. It CAN be done, but it requires a tremendous amount of custom fab work.

Your best bet is making hybrid axles.

stubbifying the legacy pumpkin? oooo sounds doable

hmmm, could that be done without messing with the lash adjustment on the ring and pinion? probably not huh...

after thought

:BUZZER SOUND: i'm sorry your answer was incorrect,

early legacys were stub shafts. and the early viscus goo LSDs were stub shaft.

and 90 loyales and 92 legacys both have r160s as rear diff. it's an easy bolt in swap. bada bing baba boom

and if i remember right too you don't even have to change the drive line flange on the diff. but i might be wrong on that.

i'm assuming your trying to get the viscus goo LSD for your loyale?

the only thing you would have to do, like was said was change the cover plates so the studs on the back are the right length. or do like i do and swap the studs.

now I'm getting a woody... the Legacy in question is an AWD 4.11 5 spd and I have the s/r 5spd 3.9

as much as I like the push button 4wd the 4.11 ratio could be fun too

now remember you have to match your rear diff ratio to your front diff ratio. so if you want 4.11s you would need to be swapping to a legacy awd set up.

assuming your talking about putting the 4.11s in the loyale. as far as i know no ones been able to put a set of 4.11s in a ea82 style tranny.

trust me it's been a debate on here many times about swapping ej gears in to ea trannys. because then you could go with a set of 4.44s

right, I was thinking of swapping the whole running gear, tranny back - not trying to modify the ea82 equipment - I have the entire Legacy for parts

are you including an ej22 in that equation, cause i don't know if any ones ever hooked a ej tranny up to an ea motor

so really, in effect putting the Loyale RS body on the AWD EVERYTHING... (plus ecu)

but, should I get an ea lift kit or ej? seems like I need the kit that fits the car (EA) - but then I have the ej stuff to connect to the kit... (?)

but... to further confuse myself, if it was a straight ahead ea lift I'd be replacing my ea struts with ea struts (time to change them anyway)

but now what if I want to use the Legacy struts? do they have more travel? would I end up using a shorter strut block to allow for the longer Legacy struts? for example a 4" kit with 2" tower blocks?

my brain hurts...
