March 5, 200917 yr so i'm going to resurface the flywheel in my 95 impreza today and was wondering if i have to shim the back of the flywheel when putting it back in or if i only take a small amount off will it be fine.
March 5, 200917 yr the pressure plate rests onto the surface, so it doesnt know the flywheel is thinner.
March 5, 200917 yr You could even ask the shop to machine the outer crown (where the pressure plate bolts on) a few mills more than the rest to give the disk even more grab. That's what was done on mine the last time I replaced the clutch and it works super. The machinist offered that to me. I did'nt know it could be done. If you choose to do that, ask the guy if he has done that before and knows what he is doing. Not a good idea to be a guinea pig. Good luck!
March 6, 200917 yr I resurfaced the flywheel in my '96 OBW and took off about the same, 40 thou if I recall. Got rid of all the chatter and 10k later it hasn't returned, fingers crossed it stays that way. I don't know how much this matters in practice, but this was the first flywheel I had resurfaced so I did a bunch of reading beforehand to see if there was anything special I should know. I read several articles about how important having very little runout is, like .002 is all that is acceptable, so I made sure to indicate the surface real good before I took any cuts. You might check it on a surface plate if you have one handy and haven't already put it back on.
