does anyone know if the alternator for a 2005 legacy is interchangeable with an older model. the stores i have been calling are saying b/c it is a newer car that the parts are not available yet except by dealer. i dont really want to pay those crazy prices.

237.00 at first subaru (n/a 2.5L). Look up Alt Rebuilders, Auto electric repair in your local yellow pages. You may be able to find a local rebuilder, but be warned, sometimes the volt regular or diode trio (well they are more then trios now) can cost more then just getting a rebuilt alt.
