March 18, 200917 yr Hi All, I have a 1997 Legacy GT Wagon. I attempted to replace the rear brake pads this AM but was stopped by a stuck caliper bolt. I also have never seen a caliper that uses an allen head! As soon as I put the socket on the bolt, it began to round the bolt head. It seems that the previous owner bungled the bolt head and the allen head. I sprayed with PB Blaster to soak, tapped with a hammer and tried to gently get things turning but to no avail. I may give up at take it in to get done, but dang I could do this for $20 myself if I can get the caliper loose. Any suggestions other than heating with a torch? Thanks.
March 18, 200917 yr torch. my 92 SS had a noisy rear caliper, and the bolt is so rusted, that it would be guaranteed to break off upon removal even after soaking it. If it breaks off, lots of hard drilling, and retapping. YOU DO NOT WANT T ORISM BREAKING IT OFF.....so TORCH is the only way when the car is in the salt belt. My 92SS came from MN btw.
March 18, 200917 yr Author Thanks. I will give it a shot! Dang I don't like using a torch hear the back of the car!
March 19, 200917 yr Depending upon which side it is on, you may want to check your fuel filler neck first to make sure its ok . Also a lot of nut-buster in a can (choose your brand) will help. nipper
March 19, 200917 yr I agree, that bolt is going to snap. I would pickup a caliper mouting braket and new bolts. You could probally get it all for under 25 bucks if you post for it.
