How can I tell if an EJ22 is interference engine or not??? MY 95 vs MY97???

How can I tell if EJ22 is interference engine or not??? MY 95 vs MY97???

From exhaust ports?

 

There is a difference in the heads. You'll notice the plugs are located differently between the two(or mine was). 97 and up is interference I believe

95 is not interference

97 is interference

 

other than that, i'm not sure of any tell tale signs, but it would be a good thing to know for the 96/97 years to be sure.

The EJ22 in one of MY 95 legacy has a dual port exhaust and I thought MY95 and 96 have single exhaust port, so that lead me to think interference EJ22 has dual port exhaust:confused:

Maybe someone before me replaced the engine with a interference from 97???

95 was the last year for dual port EJ22. non- interference.

96 was the first year for the single port EJ22. non-intereference

97-98 was single port EJ22. interference

EJ22 went to phase 2 in 99. all phase 2 is interference.

yeah the exhaust has nothing to do with whether it's interference or not.

 

all 1995's are dual ports (and non interference).

 

all 1997 and up EJ22's (actually all 97+ Subaru engines) are interference.

Like I said, the plugs are in a slightly different location because they changed the heads
