This is the clutch disk out of an 88 XT AWD. What would cause this thing to come apart like this?

Faulty manufacturing is what it looks like to me.

Especially since it stripped along a layer.

Unless you were driving it like a bat out of #311.

That might explain it.

Severe over heating can cause separation like that.

I wasn't driving it at the time this happened, I was thinking there was a hard fast downshift, and a pow................

Probably a moot point that it failed like that. Hard to tell by the photos but looks like the lining was worn down close to the rivets. Likely very close to failing anyway.
