92 Legacy turbo into 97 impreza obs

Featured Replies

Hey, I have been playing with the idea of trying to swap my 97 obs with a 92 legacy 2.2 turbo. I am trying to get an idea of weather this is along the same lines as doing a wrx swap or is it a little more of a drop in due to the fact of matching 2.2 engines. Also I am under the impression that the legacy turbo is not that big so will swapping out the tranny and diff be necessary or would the n/a tranny and diff be strong enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do the legacys have a hydraulic clutch or cable???

basically the same as a WRX swap, you'll still need all the wiring and ECU swapped. the EJ22 designation essentially makes nothing simpler.

i thought hydraulic clutches were a later thing - like 96+, but i could be wrong.

Check out http://bbs.legacycentral.org/index.php and http://forums.nasioc.com/. Lots of swap info there.

You'll be dealing w/considerably more HP/torque w/the turbo...so upgrading the clutch may be needed, but the tranny itself may be Ok....for awhile.

The rear diff will need to match the tranny.

I think the clutch is hydraulic on the turbos...but search above.

Biggest issue will be engine management (EM) - OBDII on OBS vs. OBDI on EJ22T. You'll need a piggyback computer or similar.

Good luck,

Td

Do you have to pass emissions?

The first gen legacy is a hydraulic if its a turbo.

I think the OBS 5 speed tranny would be ok depends on you more than the trans. Launching won't be ok but spirited driving should be fine.

Youre going to have to move the engine crossmember to clear the turbo up pipe but thats realatively straightforward with the engines out.

92 legacy turbo is OBD1, it won't pass emissions if you have them in your area. You'd need the legacy turbo engine crossmember. The legacy turbo trans isn't much stronger really, but the clutch is a hydraulic pull clutch. You'd have to do some wire harness merging to make it work.
