Is a 99 Impreza 2.2L an interferance engine?

Featured Replies

Now I'm curious - the 99 2.2 has TWO cam sensors?

ok, wait a minute i'm probably wrong, i just assumed with a cam on each head there would be a sensor on each head.

someone correct me.

ooops!!!!!!

And I think the engine assumes that if one cam is in synch the other one better be too!

Yeah, all it needs is one.

I was thinking I had missed something - two cam sensors.

I panicked when I just resealed the front of a 99 2.2 that I had forgotten to get the cam Orings but it appears to not have them. A different setup over around the cam sensor and no place for an Oring.

Thought maybe it had 2 cam sensors as well and I had missed that.

Heres where we stand at this poibt, got the timing kit with all

new idlers and tensioner today. Will get the water pump

tomorrow.

Should I just put it all together and test fire or do another

form of diagnosis first?

Bill

I'd put it all together. Part of that process (atleast for me) is making a few revolutions by hand to make sure things still line up.

There will be resistance at spots, and spots that it will force the wrench "ahead". If you haven't done this before you may not be used to it.

Either stuff is bent or not. The new components won't effect that at all.

Why not try the route you're going?

+1--go for it, but carefully! Definitely turn it by hand a few times to see if anything feels or sounds odd.

Good luck.

Well... Everything felt good, but no fire.

Checked compression got 80, 0, 0, 0.

Guess I'll pull the heads and se what else is bunged up.

Let me retract that last post.

Have you ever done something so obvious, so stupid, and then had to fess-up?

I used the arrow on the left cam pulley not the hash mark. :-\

Realized something was amiss when doing a leakdown test and all

cylinders were at 25-30% except one which is at 40%.

So in brief, she breathes again, no help to my stupid mistake,

glad I did not pull those heads for no reason!

So . . . so . . . so did she fire off?!!

Hey - atleast you found it.

Now you know to go by the dots and hash marks and not the arrows.

I would have still expected good compression of the cylinders on the cam that you had set correctly though.

It'll be interesting to see how this one works out.

Yes, fired on all 4 cylinders.

Yep, Got lucky I guess.

Seems I do have an issue with right side rear cylinder

when I did the leak down test. It was in the high yellow end (40%)

so I have to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for everyone's input.
