June 5, 200916 yr I'm losing engine coolant in my EA82 Loyale 5-speed, non-turbo. I'm not sure where I'm losing it from, though. I replaced the gasket leading into the cylinder head not too long ago, and that's where I was losing most of it, but I'm leaking somewhere else now. What are some common places for it to leak from? Anything else I should check?
June 5, 200916 yr Probably a head gasket leak, has the car been overheated? Any leaks on the ground, or in the passenger compartment? Is the radiator cap working properly? -Bill
June 9, 200916 yr I'm in nearly the same boat. My '92 Loyale is doing the same thing. I'm pretty sure it is a head gasket. I recently changed and flushed my coolant. Shortly after I kept needing to add coolant and at first thought it was just air in the system. After adding nearly two gallons of 50/50 over a couple of months I have come to the realization it must be a head gasket. No leaks visible and I just found the smallest amount of foamy oil high up on the oil dipstick. I just couldn't believe the coincidence that the head gasket went right after I changed the coolant and so initially thought it was just air in the system.
June 9, 200916 yr I don't want to steal your thread but I have a related question. When people say "overheated" how hot are we talking? I know my car ran hot after changing the coolant and having some air in the system but it never got as hot as the redline.
June 9, 200916 yr i wonder if mabe changing your hot coolant out for some cold may have done it on your coolant change....that is if you did it hot. when i was working at a jube shop it always bothered me to run the coolant machine, the kinda operated by an air system in the shop that have the 2 big cylinders, one new coolant and one elpty for old and and you done sucking old stuff out you push, or more let the system suck the new stuff in. i always waited for white smoke...
June 10, 200916 yr Recheck the intake manifold gasket - good chance you used an inferior aftermarket gasket and improperly installed it. Only 12 ft/lbs on the three bolts, and NEVER use an aftermarket cardboard gasket. The OEM gaskets are like a head gasket - graphite inpregnated metal. GD
