1997 Outback engine problem

Featured Replies

I have a 1997 Outback that has low compression (25lbs) in the fourth cylinder. I have not tore into the engine yet so I’m not sure what the problem is nor do I know how much it would cost to rebuild one head. I came across a set of heads for sale ($150), they are off of a 1998 Outback. I’m going to pull the head off of my car and at least figure out what the problem is before I would buy these other heads. But what I really need to know is will the heads off of a 1998 Outback engine fit on a 1997 Outback engine? Thanks in advance for any info to this question.

I believe they changed designs in 98 - but an expect should chime in. I do know that 97's have the shims to adjust the valves.

If the 98's are a different design I'd swap them both for consistency sake or just get a 97 head.

yes, same head.

before you pull the head, double check the timing belt and alignment marks. it may have jumped time. but your compression is so low i doubt it, maybe a valve.??

the 98 heads will work fine on your 97 EJ25.

be sure to use Subaru only head gaskets for this engine when reassembling.
