Last week, the drive pulley for our 1997 Subaru Legacy 250T worked it's way loose. (Thankfully as we were right around the corner.)

Can you guys tell me if I can simply put Locktite on it and tighten to its specified torque... or is there more involved?

Can you tell me what torque it needs to be tightened to?

What kind of condition is the pulley in? Is the keyway hogged out? What I'm getting at is, why it came loose will dictate what you have to do to fix it.

Things can get ugly when this happens.

 

I started a thread about one that I just did a week or so ago with some pics.

 

Unfortunatley in the heat of the moment I forget to take pick of the crankshaft that needed welded, ground down, and the keyway fixed. But there are pics of the harmonic balancer, oil pump, whatever the cogged pulley that drives the timing belt is called. Also trashed the timing belt cover. Never did find any known pieces of the key.

 

Someone had installed a new Harmonic Balancer probably after their first screwup.

The pulley looks to be in great shape with the key (on the crank) a little bunged up, but not too bad.

All depends on the condition, sounds like yours is minor.

 

On numerous occassions I have installed a crank pulley without any key. It's iron/steel bolt and a cast iron crank, i've never stripped one. I use a 1/2" socket and a 2-3foot (1 meter) pipe over the handle and put some serious stank into it. It will not come off if done right like that. Of course - all appropriate disclaimers apply - don't overtigthen and strip it and don't make it too loose.

 

Sounds like your key is still in place and the pulley isn't even bad, sounds easy as cake to me. clean it up with a file/sand paper if need be, if the metal is all gouged and install it.
