Cooling Troubleshooting

Featured Replies

Im not the best mechanic out there and i have run into a problem. My new Loyale overheats pretty much once every time i drive it. Its about 95 every day here and i try to not rally drive it knowing that just causes heat. Here is what i have done to chase down the problem. Cooling system flush. I also left it running on an incline to get rid of bubbles and topped it off. Still having issues. So today i replaced the thermostat with just a standard Autozone part. Same issue happening. Im stumped at this point. Remember im a work on it in your driveway mechanic. Anything else i should try before i take it to a mechanic? Thanks

There are a few thigs left.

The radiator cap may be tired.

loosen the radiator and inspect it. This car is old enough where the cooling fins may have disintigrated. This would be on the side facing the front of car, behind the condenser for the AC. You may have to remove it to check it. ALso you may have a clogged radiator.

Are your cooling fans working? Is there any play in the fan motor shafts?

The cap looks brand new, if my radiator were clogged, is there a way to clean it out or just junk yard a used one? Same scenario if the cooling fins are worn out? I can hear the cooling fans revving up while im driving so unless there is play in the shafts i would say they are doing their job.

Its so old it may fall apart on a cleaning. If you really like this car, I would suggest a new one, as a used one may be just as bad.

How are the hoses?

When was the last time the water pump was replaced?

Hoses are good, not sure on the water pump condition, I just bought the car for 300 bucks so i may just try a used one for now. Are there any indicators that will help me know for sure if its a clogged radiator? Thanks for your help!

I never liked this check, but feel for cold spots. I personally like taking putting a hose in the top, open the drain, let the water flow, and feel the radiator to make sure it is evenly cold.

Im betting its your radiator thats shot.

Worn water pump impeller is a possability too.
