i gave my cousin a 90 legacy, it was originally a 2wd auto, and needed some engine work. i had a 93 impreza, which i had swapped an ej22 into, (originally an ej18) i swapped the ej22 into the legacy, and mated it to the impreza's 5 spd and made a conversion out of it. he is having trouble getting axles for it. we alreay know about the difference in the ID of the DOJ between auto's and manuals, but my issue is this, he ordered an axle for a 2wd impreza and is using it in the legay butif he slides the DOJ in enough to get the roll pin in it then he can't get the axle nut started. it seems the axle is too short. is there a size difference (lengthwise) between the legacy and the impreza? the legacy has stock suspension on it, and it's a 90, whereas the tranny in the legacy came out of a 2wd 5sp impreza and it was a 93. thanks guys

sorry guys, where are my manners, as i haven't introduced myself? i am not new to soobs or the board although i haven't been on here i about 4-5 years. my username on the old board was myossfeece, and i worked a great deal with milesfox, and you can search for some my old threads by looking for the username myosfeece. I am still all abut subarus and i currently own an 03 baja. i am in the army now, and just got back to america from germany where i have spent the last 4 years. anyways i am back in the states now, and it is so good to be back. thanks for any help you can provide

Welcome, I am pretty sure it is the same length. As far as I know atleast lol. On the side that goes into the diff stub it should move in and out pretty far. Can you pull it? I find sometimes it gets stuck because of so much grease creating a vacuum.

i've swapped legacy and impreza axles many times, i don't think those platforms are any different. the engines, trans, suspension are all intechangeable for the most part.

 

probably with impreza FWD are the 23 splined axles. but that axle should work fine. maybe it just needs worked loose for a little extension like he said above?
