uh oh loud angry noise after installing new tranny

Recommended Posts

95 impreza 1.8l 5 speed awd.

just installed a new tranny.

started her up and a very loud grindingish noise came from the engine bay.

detached accesory belt and tried again.

same noise.

the noise is the same clutch in and out.

it is linked to RPM's

Took the starter out to see if i could see wear from possible after start engagement....it look fine and the motion of the gear poping into position seemed smooth

I'm thinking i somehow crushed the pilot bearing upon install.

any thoughts here gentlemen....?

or could be that a clip fell off the throuwout bearing?

these are my best guesses.

someone please tell me i'm wrong.

Ive done both of the things you mentioned before..Its quite easy to do especially when your installing a tranny in these cars without the use of a lift.....Those clips are a PITA. Does the car move at all when you put it in gear and let off the clutch? I will say this..you would have never gotten the bellhousing to engine bolts/nuts in/on if you didnt get the input shaft in the pilot bearing.....Im assuming youve used a new pilot bearing/clutch kit here?

just installed a new clutch 1000 miles ago so the pilot bearing and throwout are new. I guess i should have used new clips!!!!!!!!!.

havn't tried to move it but if it moves am i good....?

anyone else second the clip theory.....

did you have to pull the whole tranny again or could you jimmy your way in there....

looks like another long weekend:mad:

GOD DAM IT!

I thought that if the clips fell off that would let your TO bearing rattle around and so make a helluva racket with the clutch out, but as soon as you put tension on it, it would shut up. Is this not the case?

When you say it's linked to RPM, what do you mean? Does it get louder the faster the engine spins?
