August 20, 200916 yr So I have never changed a starter in a Legacy before, need to swap one out for my brother. Anything to look out for? Any tips or tricks? I have done them in GLs, but never legacy. One step I will be able to skip on a legacy, won't have to remove the spare tire.
August 20, 200916 yr Don't recall them being difficult. The one nut/bolt is easier gotten from the bottom to have some leverage. That's about all that I remember. You'll want to remove some plumbing around the intake - plastic and air hoses - atleast I do. But not a big or unpleasant job at all. I feel sure that the procedure is written up already and you could find it with some searching.
August 21, 200916 yr Negative lead off the Battery 12mm nut off the positive lead on the starter pull the connector off the back of the starter 17mm nut on the bottom stud, the hard one to get to. Break it with a box end wrench from the top, once its loose you can spin it off by hand or get a socket on it. I always replace it with a 14mm nut, exhaust or engine mount nuts work. 14mm Remove the top bolt and pull it and the starter out. Install in reverse order.
