Hooking up the jumper cables like that isn't a problem. The simple fact is that your car has nothing more than a big fat wire going straight from the battery - to the chassis. I would start by searching for this on the board. Happens all the time and usually has nothing to do with electronics. This is normally caused by differences in tire size that cause the transmission to bind up and "lock" into 4wd. If you don't have identical size tires with close to the same tread depth on each this will happen all the time. If you jack up the car on all four corner you should be able to get it to come out. You can also start by looking at the actuation mechanism on the trans. It is basically a big vaccum solinoid that moves a level on the side of the trans. If you can see it trying to move when engage and disengage the button then tire sizes and binding is your demon. Keith
January 28, 200422 yr Backing the car up 20 feet or so will also work. Do not run on a surface that is not traction challenged i.e. snow covered You may want to read this link Jump starting the safe way
January 28, 200422 yr Author latrobe PA eh skip??? you a fan of the old 33? anyway, i knew all that stuff about jumping, my neighbor is just a retard who will never again be trusted with my car. after that moment, my vent selector on my climate control stopped working too, everything is the center and side vents, no floor, no defrost. probably gonna have to rip out the dash to find out wtf is wrong with them. any suggestions on that?
January 29, 200422 yr you bet roxt, me and the green bottle have seen a few wild nights. On your problem, the dash vents are vacuum operated. you lost (got knocked off, or became dislodged somehow) the vaccum line to the white plastic cannister that sits behind the pass side shock tower, check lines to it and leaving itand all other vacuum lines as the 4wd system needs vacuum to disengage as well as engage
January 29, 200422 yr To add to skips post, The vacuum lines for the 4WD solenoids and the heater controls both come from the same source. the white canister thingy on the passenger side firewall.
January 29, 200422 yr Author i guess that'll teach me to play too hard in the snow. no more donuts in the parking area for my poor little soob. Thanks for all the help guys.
January 29, 200422 yr Author you guys were right, vacuum hoses were shaken loose in the engine compartment. out of 4wd and vents work perfectly now!
January 29, 200422 yr skip was right, this happened to me on my way back from jims, the hose came off, and i didnt notice it when i set off on my 100 mile trip within an hour of sewapping the intake/carb the heater vent selector is also connected to this, it is a fairly common problem for people to discover this, so if anyone reads this, keep that in mind >>--search keywords if this gets searched) push button 4wd vacuum canister heater selector vent control engage stuck 5spd--<<
