I found some 2 1/4 inch square tubing in my garage. It is 1/4 inch thick. Can I use it for a lift or do I need to get some 2 inch stuff.

It will probably work, I have my struts up a bit too, with the 2" lift, Its your call though

Will it cause me to need to lengthen the steering shaft?

No it will just put your struts at more of an angle, I would think.........
