singletrack Posted May 12, 2017 Share Posted May 12, 2017 (edited) Hiya boys! Bugeye RS 5 speed, 1" lift. Broke at the end of a 14 hour drive. Car gets driven HARD. Started popping, clunking, binding when we came off the highway. Replaced suspect front CV. Replaced suspect propshaft (it was toast!) Most suspension components replaced in the last year Idles fine, coasts with no bind All gears engage Rear diff spins free Clutch has ~ 40k I've had it to the mechanic for a second opinion, they pointed out the bad propshaft UJ. Binds tight enough to stop the car at low speed. Binding much worse when turning. I'm thinking further inspection of engine and tranny mounts? Or front, center diff? If you can get it up on stands or a lift, try putting it in gear and cranking the steering to both locks, see if you see anything. That's where I would start. If you can get it up on stands or a lift, try putting it in gear and cranking the steering to both locks, see if you see anything. That's where I would start. idosubaru Posted May 14, 2017 Share Posted May 14, 2017 Auto trans will shear the drum off inside the trans if driven with too much binding. Does anyone know the equivalent failure of an MT stressed internally with torque bind? Torque bind seems the obvious starting point - maybe it's been happening awhile or was happening under the aggressive driving described which precipitated or accelerated the U joint failure and busted some stuff in the trans as well.
