On my 96 2.2L I got to the back corner bolts with a swivel extension, and to the two center ones thru two holes in the cross member. I had to enlarge these holes with a rat tail file and a Dremel tool. Not easy. Takes patience.

Be very careful when replacing the two back center bolts, very easy to cross thread due to the uneasy access. Begin by using an extension with the tips of your fingers before puting a ratchet on it.

I know others unbolt the engine mounts and jack it up an inch or two.

Hope that helps.

thanks that actually helps me out alot :D since I dont have a dremel tool guess Ill have to raise the engine with a jack which seems like it should work so all I have to remove is the bolts at the bottom? and put a jack underneath and it will raise without bringing the car up with it?

Maybe others will be able to give you more precise advice on this since I have never raised nor removed the engine on my car. But I remember a friend of mine doing this with a Loyale: he just gave slack to the engine mounts retaining bolts (frame side or engine side? I dont remember) and could then raise the engine just enough to clear the rear bolts. Maybe give some slack to the trans mounts also.

The factory manual says to remove the two engine mount bolts and raise the engine. It also says to remove the exhaust manifolds, but if you can get clearance without doing this, it will save you a lot of hassle trying to seal the manifolds later.

Be aware that there is a long tube that sticks into the pan, and that the pan has a lot of internal plates, meaning you need to wiggle the pan forward, down and out.

Yah I got the oil pan off the imreza at the junk yard with a little bit of a struggle bent the dip stick tube :( but when I brought it home I couldnt get it off my car cause I couldnt raise the engine at all with my lil jack and couldnt find a good spot to place the jack so I had to take it to ROOS ONLY here in denver they did it for $130 which im glad I didnt try to do it cause I gues auto zone sold me the wrong gasket :(

but shes all better now cept a few cosmetic things need to be put back in place

I have my pan patched (this is in what condition I baught it). Although it seems to don't leak, nobody knows if the patching glue doesn't interfere with engine oil, so I think it would be safer just to replace a whole pan. I've done change of crankshaft bearings on my Nissan before, so I think I will be fine replacing this pan on my own, although some questions come to mind:

can you recommend any places where I can find replacement pan for cheap or just junkyards (not many of the ones around my area have subaru's to my knowledge)?

on nissan I was using high temp silicon to seal the pan when I place it back, should I use it here or there is a gasket to buy?

Thanx in advance
