Do the 1995 and 1996 2.2L engines get the piston slap problem?

As far as I know, only the 2.5 has the slap.

My 2.2 is silent.

If you hear something coming from the 2.2, a lot of the time it is normal. It can be a light ticking, to a very loud ticking. In my mom's 95 Legacy L 2.2l, it ticked for about two months back in 2003. It was so loud and annoying. One day when I was jumping a friends car, I revved it to 5500RPMs and it stopped. It has not done it since...and that has been 40,000 miles.

I think it is usuly the valve lifters that make the ticking. My 2.2l Outback ticks very softly...sometimes you can't even tell unless your head is under the hood.

The EJ20 I have slaps in the morning. And I am not alone here in Europe.

My 1990 EJ22 never slapped. Ticked three times on start-up, but it cured itself.

Mine taps constantly between oil changes. After a change, it goes away for about 2-3 weeks, then it starts to creep back. I guess consumption over time reducing oil pressure and I need to be more on the ball about topping off every 1,000 miles or so? This last time (about 1,000 miles ago) I filled up with semi-synth and used a PureOne oil filter and no clicky so far.

Mattocs, did you try anything to stop the ticking? Like addatives? I drove a 96 Legacy 2.2L a few weeks ago, it ticked terribly! Decided not to buy it because it made me nervous. Does subaru say this is normal?
