A Network of Subie Mechanics...
Rossta86 replied to Alexx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I work at a shop here in northern VA. Most places now days don't even want to touch carburetors. My shop definetly won't work on them, nor anything below 1980, nor certain Euros. I have some buddys working at the local subaru dealer and i know they won't work on carbs. It sucks, but the moneys not there, so most shops aren't either. I'm waiting for my weber, its a much simpler carburetor, and there are alot more people who know how to tune those. -
What do you think of rev-matching?
Rossta86 replied to Ma-fia's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm sure there is a science to it, but what i do is i guess what gear is right for the speed, rev it up, and when the rpm's are coming down slip it into gear. A guy at my shop drove his geo 60 miles to work with no clutch, slip shifting it the entire way to fix it in the shop, just something intersting i thought i would add. -
I'm with subarubrat on this one. Talk to some people, and find the right inspector. I work at a shop and most inspectors (for safety inspection) that i have meat/dealt with can be reasoned into passing if there are no real safety concerns. Emission inspections are a little tuffer if they actually run it on a dyne like here in parts of VA. Thats when you convince them to run another car in place of yours just with your vin number in the computer, probably a hard thing to do if you don't know an inspector personally. If it is just a visual inspection only i wouldn't worry too much. Meeky Moose they won't know the difference, as long as you remove the emssions sticker from under the hood, but u were probably including that when you said all of the emission stuff

The way i did my 6 lug conversion was I frist drilled the hubs with a 9/16 bit? I think that was it. I had too grind down some of the sides of the studs to make them fit better. Then i actually ran it for atleast 500 miles with studs loose in the drilled holes. It does fine aslong as the lugs are tight. Once i got my welder and be came comfortable with it, i pulled my hubs off, bolted them to the wheel, then filled in the low spots and put a bead around the studs. One can argue which is better (drilling the hub or rim), but im just stating that this way worked fine. I probably would have drilled the rims, except the style of yota wheels i got could not be drilled right. I don't think i would try to grind the hub itself down, just because the metal is pretty hard.

Bad battery? Starter? Alternator?
Rossta86 replied to lastchance's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you know that your battery is good. The next step i would do is look at your battery cables for corrosion and do a voltage drop test from the battery to the starter. That will tell you if there is too much resistance (oxidation) in that cable, hence how the solinoid on the starter is clicking, but it doesn't have enough "juice" to turn the engine over. (especially if the cable is 20 years old with the car) -
I am skeptical about putting 26 or 27 inch tires on with out a lift. I run 27.7 inch tires on yota rims with a 3 inch lift and i had to do some fender cutting, but a lot of beating inside on the wheel well. I could be wrong but i don't think u can get away with putting 26 or 27 inch tires on your unlifted soob without and fender cutting, unless you intend to drive in a straight line? Just my thoughts, i could be wrong though.

USMB Gallery is back! Better than ever!!
Rossta86 replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry this isn't on topic, but Brian i sent you a pm about some pictures of my brat that i would like to post in the album. I never heard back on anything, but i know its hard to keep track of all this stuff. If you could email me or message me or even post back in this thread i would appreciate it. Thanks -
Does anyone know if worn transmission mounts could cause a shimmy in the steering wheel around 50 to 60 but then stops after 60? How much play do your mounts have, i can grab my trans under the car and shake the tranny back and forth a good at least a half inch to each side, posibly more. Thanks

to everyone who has done the 6 lug conversion
Rossta86 replied to Rossta86's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
13 mm stuck in my mind when i was looking at a poster at the machince shop, but it could have been 14 mm. Either way i drilled with a 9/16 and the wholes are just slightly too big for the studs. -

Thanks for the quick reply nomad. Yea they must have drilled them with a 13 mm drill bit i believe. Anyone else out there? -
I can't say for an ea82, but i know on my brat with a 3 inch lift i have 215/75/15s, they are about 27.7 inches in diameter, im not sure about the width, but with the offset of my toyota rims they do just fine. Of course i had to do some fender trimming and then beat the rear of the wheel well back with a hammer, but im deifnelty satisfied now. Don't know if that helps but i thought i would just voice my opinion.

I completed the 6 lug conversion and i love it. I drive my brat every day with out any major problems from it, but i still want to ask some other people who have done it a couple questions, so maybe i could refine my conversion. 1.What size drill bit did you use? 9/16 or did u find a 13 mm drill but that would go through the front hubs with out being eaten up after 1 hole. 2.Also if u did use 9/16 drill bit what kind of studs are u running.(from what kind of vehicle?) My stock subaru studs can be pushed in and out of the wholes almost efortlessly. 3.What did you do about the uneven area on the front hubs(where the back of the stud should sit, but the surface is not flush). Did you grind down one side of your stud or did u grind the hub so its flat? Thats all i can think of at the moment maybe some more questions will come to me later. Thanks

will my tires clear? byb 3/4
Rossta86 replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
GeneralDisorder how was your acceleration before the weber after the 28's?(if u installed in that order). Was unberable or something you could live with? Thanks -
I live in Woodbridge, for some reason i thought remington was in Southern Va.

I have finished the rear hubs but have not test driven it. 1/2 is too small it will split the drum/hub assembly when pressed in. 9/16 works but leaves it so the studs are loose and can be pulled in and out nearly by hand. I have drille one hole for the front, well almost, and the metal for the front is much tougher than the rear. I think i may try to get me hands on a 13mm drill bit to finish the rest?
-
What size drill bit should i use to drill the holes for my 6 lug conversion? I have a 9/16 here, but im scared it will drill them too big? Also what did you guys use to drill them, a drill press or just a hand held drill? Thanks.
-
WHere did you guys get your discover sst's? I havn;t been able to find them anywhere. thanks

Do i need to get the old wheel bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in the steering knuckle. Or is there a way i can do it at home my self? Thanks

I was looking at a 205 75 15 at my work today they were 27.4 inches tall but i dont know how wide. Could i go 215 75 or would that be too wide? What should i worry bout more the height or the width. Thanks for all the replys.

MY 3/3 lift is on its way for my 86 brat. Im going to run 15 inch toyota rims from a 90 4-runner. Im looking at 26 or 27 inch tires, but i don't know what size i should get(205 70 15.......). So what size would be a good choice for 26-27 and still be narrow enough to fit on my brat? thanks
