  1. did I say white? I meant blue... I think. DOH! Now I cant remember because I read what I wrote. I will have to think about it Russ. The tranny works great for the most part. If I put it in first, parking break on, I can let the clutch out about half way before it starts to die. Which tells me the clutch is strong. But it doesnt like third. Maybe I am just a sloppy shifter but it tries to throw the stick out of third sometimes, it prefers me to be really clean (holding clutch deep pushing and holding stickshift deep into third while releasing clutch.) might not be such a problem since I know the fix =) Tranny fluid looked okay but I will check it again. I was having to average two slanted readings (one uphill one down HA!) Let me know. Hey Russ/andrew since russ is closer could we meet for the timing light at russ's house? Or would after my work at andrews be better for you two? Joshua
  2. Cool Idea on the rollup gasket paper. I'll check the dealer first and see how much $$$ they want to squeeze me for. Conversion isn't my top priority but I am glad to know that its fairly straight forward. I think I have the vacuum diagram. I am more concerned about my tranny/clutch right now =) I would love to learn how to time a car! Andrew doesnt really think we need it but I would love to try it out and see how its done so i can do it later in life. Where does your light hook up to the car? I hear there are two types? And yes, the smoke was white. Thanks Russ. Talk to you guys soon. hey I have andrews number but not yours Email me and lets exchange numbers Geck512@yahoo.com
  3. also i was wondering what parts I will need to do a conversion to a Hitachi from my Carter/weber. Thanks
  4. Okay, When push on my air filter housing my Carter/stays tight to the air filter but pulls off of the engine. I want to get down in there and tighten it down but I want to replace the gaskets above and below that spacer. Where the heck can I get them? Hey Andrew, Russ. The car was dying all the way home. I adjusted the throttle cable to take out a bunch of slack and burned off some oil by taking off the top of my air filter housing and reving the thing, (streams of white smoke pushed out but tapered off) went and bought a new air filter. It doesnt seem to die much anymore. Usually just when dropping rpms hard. I still think a proper timing is in order after swapping the disty, I know we lined everything up but it scares the crap out of me. Hey andrew you should see my door handle housings! I took them all off and scrapped them down with a flexible butter knife and a flexshaft dremmel with a wire brush and the crummy decayed plastic powdered right off (more with the knife than the brush) The brush more or less got the corners and smoothed out a few things. I then used some stuff (black back or black restore or something like that) and it turned it all the right color (tan for those who dont know.) I recommend this fix! Its not perfect but it looks far less tacky. I managed to get the torsion bar, the one that holds the trunk up, in with just my hands. I wired up my stereo correctly and now can listen to tunes. I also connected my rear speakers. I am missing my passenger speaker but I will try to find that at a junk yard. Got the paint and stickers off. (the paint on the steering wheel was not easy.) it was white out for those just tuning in said something to the tune of No Girls allowed:banghead: The story is I just bought an 83 gl 1.8 c/w 1bbl 2wdr with power steering, no ac, marron w/ tan interior, no moon roof no apparent mods (other than a strange radiator) it is a salvage title and has a been totaled ( I still dont know the story on that but I have the original owners phone #) In the future I want to switch carbs (maybe I heard a few people that speak rather highly of the 1bbl) So I guess the original question. Where can I get the gaskets for the Carter/weber? Thanks USMB Joshua
  5. There is a 360 on Ebay right now for under that, looks restorable. Its in LA. Joshua
  6. Its a manual. Do we know anyone who might be in the mood to offer a helping hand in the Gorge area? White Salmon/Hood River? Thanks Joshua:slobber:
  7. Smokes white grey looks like steam but smells rank. I cant get the hose off the pcv and I cant get the pcv off ::LAUGH:: I only have one wrench. The kind that opens and closes like a lever. I am going to borrow some crescent wrenches? The closed ended/open ended sort. GOSH I pray its the PCV. Thanks Folks I will keep you informed. PS Preciate the tip on the title. No more mellodrama until i get to message! HA
  8. I have a 1986 GL-10 Turbo four door push button 4wdr that doesnt work. (probably the electronics as they stink on this rig) It always smoked. A little at startup maybe a little from the part of the exhaust where it joins into the single pipe the stove I think its called. Well I park after a long trip. It smokes I check it out. Its a little thicker than usual but nothing to be concerned about right... :cough: Well... I spend an hour in the library hop back it let it coast down the hill and turn it over (bad starter you see) and moments later I find I am driving a Jet! Trail of smoke and all. I make it the four or five blocks back home from my trip and park it I am really smoking! From the tail pipe and gobs from under the hood. I shut it down and get under the hood. Cant see a thing I am a bit of an idiot when it comes to doing things under there. So I go for the dipstick. I am parked on a slight down hill so I can get it going again next time and the stick reads Nothing. Nothing boys and girls. Ladies and gents I was just driving a car with no oil. Now my temp gauge isnt the most accurate thing on the car but it never read hot. My radiator never had a problem. I was running my heater and it never got overly hot. What did I do? Every time I start the thing its a smoke storm. I tried to put more oil in and put in WAY to much. So I am going to drain it and fill it proper tomorrow morning. I am going to check the pcv I read that can sometimes cause a bucket of smoke. The engine sounded fine. It still had power. It just smokes so much I am sure someone is going to careen off the road behind me or I am going to burst into flames. Oh please help I simpley cant afford another car. Well maybe that 82 soobie down the street. new tires, needs a Starter module? (thats what the owner said) I think he means an(Ignition controller module) but what do I know!? I know he only wants two hundred for it. :cough: I paid three for the one thats smoking and I am not ready to let her die! Please all suggestions welcome! Joshua:eh:
  9. Wonderful! I will try that tomorrow and let you know how it goes! Geck512:drunk:
  10. Okay so I am going to a yard to rip a starter out of a wrecked Soob of like year and make? The shorter one because I have a 4wd (which wont engage?) Any estimates on what I should be paying for it? Know any good yards in the portland/columbia gorge/corvallis area? Thanks:clap:
  11. Awhile back my starter stopped working... I have a standard so as long as I park on a hill I am okay. I tried an extreme fix which was to try and start it when the engine was running at really low rpms. this allowed it to start for a while more but alas no longer. I am going to try and take out my starter and get it fixed/ replaced. ADVICE? I have a 1986 4 door sedan turbo gl-10. Where should I go to get one of these? Should I get one new? Should I have it rebuilt. I have a chiltons and a how to keep your soob runnin guide so I can pull it easy enough. But once I have it out I have no Idea what to do with it or where to go. All advice appreciated. Also for you Soob lovers. Why does the xt and my car have different starters? They seem to be the same car? What makes the xt different from my GL-10 turbo Danku. Geck512 Soob owner and proud of it!
  12. Forgot, Its a five speed manual, and I dont know if its a swapped engine. it has leaks (oil I think) not bad and it appears to be seals (err gaskets) its pretty thick under there but it doesnt seem to drip much not sure what rate I am loosing it. I dont notice startup smoke. It starts great. Idles well. Sometimes a bit slow 650 rpm and such ::shrug:: Joshua:D
  13. Okay lets see If I get all this right. I am skipping the clips screw thing for now on the distributor because the car is parked a few blocks away this is a library computer and I might lose it ! Umm it has the orange dash. I have a car layout on the far right of it turbo in the top left (which never comes on) I have a car temp gauge that sometimes works (goes out usually after I drive a bit) fuel gauge likes to go to empty for no reason. (even on flat straights and such) after a bit of driving my height button start flashing and the little side-view-mycar-icon starts looking like its jumping up and down. A neat effect but probably not what they were going for. As far as I can tell the height button does nothing but change the icon. (no car changes physically). The parking brake light likes to flicker and stay on some times. Speed seems to work well (havent been arrested yet) My liscence plate light is out (ithink thats just bulbs though because the fuse is good however they did some work on the rear electrics from the looks of my missing plug/pins made of plastic holding the panel in the trunk. Hrmm. plate on the door says 85 but thats usual for an 86 eh? The car really hums along and I have no want for more power. As for under the hood WHEW I think those must be diagnostic links. They seem to big and important to accidently be missing all the wires that should be hooking up to them ::chuckle:: I do have a few (maybe two wire as I rembmer) diving down pretty quick that ARE connected. I would really like to see my thermostat working. The people who owned my car afor me hooked up an analog oil pressure gauge which seems to work great and a temp gauge which doesnt work at all. The digital sometimes work so I think they didnt mess with the analog temp hookup. But who knows. I have a small wire shooting off my positive terminal on my battery.. I will get a haynes or chiltons soon. I currently am holding a how to keep your subaru alive book. Which i am still reading through. Hrmm White salmon Washington is in the gorge. Its one hour east of vancouver washinton. Right across the columbia river from Hood River, which is one hour east of Portland oregon. I also have girlfriends family in Corvallis oregon. ::shrug:: I found out more about the evolution of the Soob engine and basic design from the how to keep your soob alive book and am pleased to find out they thought it was a very easy to operate mechanically engine design derived from the vw set up (with the obvious differences) I am very interested at getting more able to repair my own car and would love to be able to service/swap complicated engine and tranny troubles. Thanks for all the great responses. I will see what I can do about pictures. Ciao:bday: Joshua
  14. Okay I just got me a sweet two tone Soob for 300 bucks. And it runs. No spare, no jack, I got electric problems out the wazoo. My gas line disconnected the first day and I lost a good bit of gas afore I figure it out. I has a high pop on the stroke some times and its got a holy exhaust that gets the passenger heady. But I still love it. Questions questions. I have a BUNCH of loose wires under the hood. mainsly right infront of the drivers side under the hood I have a few harness connects that are big and important looking. And not connected. I have a CV? boot that is cracked (the rubber thing on the way to the wheel) and I dont have any tools to my name because I just moved.... I havent been able to change my liscence plate even. What should I check out on this car? What goes wrong with this model? How do I get a compression check for free? Does anyone live in the white salmon Hood river area who likes to work on soobs? Talk to me! Your noobie soob owner JHG
