  1. Hi folks, When I start my '89 Subaru GL (carbed EA82) when its cold, it idles much too low, and sometimes dies. When it's ran for a while, or if I pump the accelerator a few times before starting, this doesn't happen and it idles normally. Where can I adjust what to fix this? am I right in thinking it has something to do with the auto choke? Cheers!
  2. Hi folks, Just wondering, what are some cheap/free ways of getting extra oomph out of a carbed EA82? I read about things like tuning the carb and stuff like that, but I don't know how to do that. Any help would be appreciated
  3. I think it's because there's an oxygen sensor somewhere in the exhaust system that monitors the oxygen level in the gases, and when it gets outta hand one way or the other it reckons the car's burning too much fuel, creating too much emissions? I may be wrong, in fact I am probably
  4. I just put the nuts back on the hill holder thinger, and had a fiddle with it - I have to say, for an almost-20-year-old car, this thing is far ahead of its time! Only thing is, on more steeper hills, it doesn't seem to be strong enough to hold the car. As for item 2, here's a coupla pics... The setup of Item 2 Weird objects circled with red, yellow tint shows how pipes run http://server2.uploadit.org/files/besterh-__item2.JPG The pump(?): http://server3.uploadit.org/files/besterh-__pumpthinger.JPG Item 2, one side http://server2.uploadit.org/files/besterh-__item21.JPG Item 2, the other side http://server3.uploadit.org/files/besterh-__item22.JPG And finally, one for Skip - this is something else I think might be different in standard equipment across the pond http://server2.uploadit.org/files/besterh-__hellagens.JPG
  5. sweet only question - I'm in the corner of the globe, good ol' New Zealand. where to get seafoam here, if the guys even have it here? Cheers for all the help folks!
  6. Hi folks, My 2nd thread ever, woo! *cough* Trying to mess a little with the clutch, I noticed two things going on under the hood of my '89 Subaru GL. First item is clutch-related. Item 1: Mysterious Clutch Thing The cable from the clutch pedal is connected to an arm coming out of the gearbox. Now, there runs a second cable from this arm, running the opposite direction of the clutch cable, makes a lazy loop under the air filter (carb'd) and ends on top of a little device on the other side of the car (opposite side of the one the master cylinder is on). This device has the cable terminating on a little wheel and spring assembly, and from this device there runs a (hydraulic?) line, looking much like the brake lines running from the master cyl. The question I have about this device is - what the heck is it? :-\ The thing is, it's not connected to the clutch arm that the clutch cable is connected to - it should be it seems, because there's a screw thread running through the arm, but it doesn't have any nuts on it. Item 2: fuel filter? On the right-hand-side of the carb(s) there appears to be a smallish pump type thing, about 1" in diameter. From this, as far as I can remember, one smallish hose runs to the carbs and one larger hose runs to the intake manifold on the right-hand pair of cylinders. From the bottom of this device, however, runs a hose which is connected to a white plastic cylinder, with the words "alcohol fuel compatible" on it, with an arrow showing the direction of flow pointing towards the little pump device, and a level indicator on it. The thing about this is, the end the plastic canister seems to be intended to suck whatever from is just hanging in empty space. Nothing connected to it, and nothing nearby that appears to have to be connected to it. Also, this plastic-looking thing is not fixed to anything. It just sits there smiling at me. Can anyone tell me what these are? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  7. Thanks for that though it seems mine doesn't have an oil pressure gauge, nor does it have a battery voltage meter. Weirdness? Quick question: what motor would be a drop-in (well, almost) replacement to this carb'd 85-horse EA82 it currently has, apart from another EA82? 85 horsepower isn't really too useful for dragging a 1.5-tonne beast around
  8. Awesome! EJ22 coming right up for my EA82-equipped '89 GL... sorry for the O/T, but where do you find these lift kits, what do they comprise of and how hard is it to install them?
  9. Hi Justin, Thanks for that. It's a wagon yes - though, where do I find an oil pressure gauge? never seen one - either that or I'm not all that observant Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look first as soon as I can. What kind of oil should I be running? The half scary thing about this is, these noisy rockers/lifters/tappets/etc - it's not permanent - it goes away, comes back, goes away, comes back, etc... very weird. Thanks, and a happy new year!
  10. *evil laugh* I have an '89 GL, how hard would it be to get an EJ22 in there? I can pick one up with very low miles on it for about US$300
  11. Hi folks, This is my first post on these forums. I've got a few questions about the 1989 Subaru GL, as per the topic title First off, what motor is it running? EA82? (it's non-EFI) Then comes the clicking noise the engine makes. I believe this is because of the lifter gaps, or whatever you call them, lol. We have feeler gauges here and I think I know what the gaps should be (0.14" for the intake, 0.1" for the exhaust, or something like that, does anyone know for sure?). The real question is, how do I pull it apart to check/adjust the gaps? Taking the tappet covers off would be a start, but is there anything to look out for? Oil gushing out, brittle gaskets (seeing as this thing HAS done upwards of 250,000km / ~125,000 miles), etc? And the final question - Clutch. Can anyone tell me how to fix up the clutch? it's pretty worn, it slips quite bad and only about 1/4 of the pedal's travel to the floor actually does something, the last 3/4's of the way to the floor it's completely disengaged. Does anyone here know exactly how to pull this thing apart and replace the clutch plate/release bearing? Cheers folks, and thanks
