  1. I would not go as far to say its the worst engine they ever made mine is still running at 315,000 miles and running strong only had to reseal the rear main and valve covers once and the water pump just started leaking i left the stock one on just to see how long it would last since it is so easy to do a timing belt on any subaru. i have owned 1.8 2.2 and 2.5 and 2.0 and i say they are all decent engines depending on application and needs.

  2. Hey Gloyale thanks for the input, when you say "You could do a 2 inch kit, and include the crossmember spacers and control arm mounts from teh outback". Are you saying that if i add those parts to my current setup that i will gain an additinal 2" of lift?

    Thanks Again

    Jordan

  3. Hello everyone, I've recently been wondering if it would be possible to get a 4" or 2" lift kit and install it on my 94 Impreza L along with my forester struts that are already installed. I know it was a tight squeeze getting those struts in there so im guessing its not possible just curious if anyone else has tryed it.

    Thanks

    Jordan

  4. Hello everyone and good day. I know this is a dreadful question that has probably been asked before but here i go any how. What is the difference between a ea82 P\T D\R and a F\T once the P\T has been put into 4wd? Does the P\T have a lower "low range" and which one would be better for an offroad rig?

    Thanks

    Jordan

  5. I'm not exactly sure what all was involved in importing it, as I didn't. another member here coordinated it all for a project of his, by the time the trans actually arrived, the project had been scrapped, so he re-sold it.

too bad it'll have to wait another year or so before it actually gets installed in anything. but the wait should be worth it.

if you're looking to do the same, you may want to ask the members who are from australia what the best way to get it done would be. maybe even join and ask over on Ausubaru.com

Thanks for the advice i joined over there today, you wouldnt wanna come off your ej d/r now would you? lol

  6. If you are using a FullTime EA D/R (from RX) then you can simply slide the EJ pinion shaft inside the hollow EA lower shaft and go for it. (*only the FT EA boxes share this hollow shaft within shaft setup with thte EJs)

Pressuming they are the same length.

I can't say for sure, but actually I think using a FT box to start with would be the *missing link* for this hybrid.

There was a little misunderstanding between me and the other party im going to be purchasing this trans off of. Its actually a P\T trans with the 4h 4l and FWD options(5sp), I believe its out of a dl but not sure. I have read through your entire thread but i cant remeber what trans you used im assuming it was a P\T due to your last post. Im a little confused on which way to go with this project I would like to use an e82 DR but still retain my subys stock 4.11 final drive. I've heard rumors that it might be possible to remove the transfer box from te EA and mate it to the EJ front diff case. Its either give that a try or find a F\T trans and try the same swap you did and see how it goes. Any one know of anyone with a e82 F\T that they are trying to get read of?

  7. I have not done it myself, but was thinking about it (until I got my hands on a genuine EJ D/R), so I was watching for any information I could find.

AFAIK, the center diff housing bolt pattern is the same. although the casing itself is different. but that should mean you can bolt an EJ center diff casing (with an EJ center diff in it....) to an EA trans or vice versa.

Sounds like it would be worth a try ill have to look into it more. Where did you find an EJ D\R if i could find one of them i would just buy it instead of going through all the trouble of mateing the e82 box on my ej diff case.

  8. It might be possible to run the EA82 dual range box modded to the EJ centre diff casing and running a 4.11 with a 1.59 low range like someone on here tried recently but at the moment it looks like what gray said is the problem and you'll just get a grenade of the gearbox problem.

Can you get an adapter plate to mount the e82 box to the center diff of the EJ trans or is there other means of going about it? Who has tryed this is there an old post on this topic?

  9. 4sp's are very different to 5sp's.. so no interchangeability that I know of. EA82 5sp vs EJ 5sp is a different story. But no, ratios cant just be swapped between the two. I would of thought to 10+ times I've said this along with others saying would of been enough for people to be able to read and understand. oh well

I see so the P\T is a 4 speed and the FT is a 5, im new to these old subaru parts so excuse me for not knowing. My plans are to put the e82 trans in my 94 Imp L so here is another question for you if you dont mind. Which trans would you recommend for off road use the FT or the PT? Or are they both relativly the same?

  10. I was considering doing a similar swap, takeing the diff, pinion gears, rings etc out of my 94 Imp 5sp trans and puting them into a e82 FT D\R trans that im about to acquire. After reading this thread im haveing secound thoughts, can the drive pinion be removed from the EJ shaft and welded onto a EA shaft? Has anyone else done this swap with success?

  11. Diffs are the same......BUT

you must swap pinion gears as well as the rings. Pinion gears are integral to the lower shaft of the transmission. Lower shafts of the EA81 4spd, EA82 5spd, and the AWD EJ boxes are all completely different.

So no, you cannot simply swap ratios.

So what you are saying is I can take the diff out of my 94 Imprezas 5 speed S\R trans(4.11), implant it into my E82 5spd D\R trans as long as i swap the pinon gears as well as the rings?

  12. I have a 94 impreza sedan and i had no trouble using the Forester Struts and Springs. yea the rear was hard to connect back to the struct but plus you have some fairly high tention springs back there expecially if they are new out of the box. But it can be done. I did it in about 3 hours. I reused the assembly for the top that i had already had for the impreza struts and springs. I get no noises from driving it and they perform just fine.
